I moved all of mine into a money market fund for now.

Nothing. Well diversified as always. Ultra-low expense ratios. I earn dividends and interest monthly and quarterly. My money works for me.

What about fiscal cliff? At a minimum I think the market is going to take a hit when capital gains go up. I may be crazy but I've very seriously considered cashing out and just taking the tax hit.

I agree but the tax and the 10% hit would kill me. About 40% with fed and state tax and the 10%.

Didn't I see a thread here about gov confiscating all 401K's? Taxes will only go up, I'd cash it in. Maybe they'll give me part of yours in another year or two.....

Liquidated equities prior to the election. Some precious metals funds now should people flock there instead of cash and the rest in bonds. The treasury won't default since they can just print to pay to coupon.

Once the fiscal cliff boils over there will be some buying opportunities in preferred shares. Might pay income on the dividends but it's still 40 cents on the dollar I didn't have before.

I expect the bullish run on ag commodities to start 2q next year.

You will lose it anyways once the nationalize it and it will be too late to pull it...

The problem is that there is no GOOD option. Every thing is dangerous. Maybe I will take it out and start over in a few months. I think that you have to have it invested and not just in an account

I wasn't allowed to withdraw mine. I got laid off and put it into mining shares. 401ks are terrible for wealth preservation. No commodities at all. I had to watch gold quadruple while my life savings languished in some 401k?!?!?

If you think oil and nat gas prices aren't going to go down, take a look at some royalty trusts. They got smashed after O got reelected. Some are paying over 15% yield right now.

As a matter of fact, Friday was the first day that many of them were in the green since election day. As always, do your own DD, I'm just offering opinion.

I bought metals and more than made up for the loss. This was a few years ago when I saw it coming. Sold my house too. Got out just in time.

Precious metals on paper is no differnt than your 401k on paper.... if it's on paper you don't own it someone else does...

I have a defined benefit pension thru the school system, nothing to take out there.

Last year we took about 50% out of my husband's IRA and payed our mortgage down to about 19 thou.

He is a lot older than I am and the tax implications were not as bad as our tax preparer expected - at all.

the other 50% we put in an annuity. A single premium, deferred annuity earning 10 percent per year (not compounded or stacked, just 10% per year) for ten years.

It is an indexed universal life policy in the annuity, with Cincinnati Life.

We got joint and survivor payouts so if one dies, the other one gets the same payout per month no matter what until
they die.

I happen to like annuities - they are like buying a pension.
In an indexed annuity, you participate in the stock market ups to some degree but NEVER lose money if the market is bullish.

Well , paying down the mortgage has caused a lot of comment at our bank - they thought we were nuts - but if we need to move, we would never be underwater. And if we have a lot less income someday soon - so what.

Unless YOU are physically holding it....that "i own precious metals" certificate from the broker isn't worth a hill of beans.

If you can role it into a self directed IRA that might give you greater flexibility, take a look at Central Fund of Canada for investment in gold/silver
