I think secret societies are breeding grounds for the elite. They need 'workers' who can keep a secret, but only on a need to know basis. The ones that are found to be good at keeping the secrets and have a passion for the 'society' ie love to help out a fellow 'brother' when one asks are deemed to be worthy and get promoted to bigger and better things.
