This is misleading. Many layers of the material are needed to stop a bullet.

If you look at the picture on this page it shows the thickness required to stop a 9 mm.

There is a liquid flexible armour that goes hard where and when a bullet strikes, a layer of this over the top sounds useful.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11508444

What you are referring to is known as an STF or shear thickening fluid.
Information about it can be found here: [link to science.howstuffworks.com] .
Provided this material works as claimed, it would be good as a composite armor system, with this as an outer layer, a layer of the STF materials, and then a layer of the molecular bonded metal that Israeli scientists were talking about 6 years ago, unless you just sandwich the STF between the fabrics for non-rigid.
Yeah, you are not gonna agree with me on a lot. Figured that out a long time ago.

My question is. How reliable is India Times? Is it a respected media source? Or is it like the National Inquirer, all BS and litle substance.

Will it don't have to go into you to kill you. If a bullet hits you in the arm, leg or chest the impact can brack and miss crap up fast.

Yep, a lump of metal a few millimetres thick travelling above the speed of sound will smash the fuck out of what lays behind a paper thin bulletproof material.

Stating the obvious but what if they use 300 layers? of this stuff, by that reckoning it should be bombproof.

How could they develop a product and not even know how it works?

I don't think this is human technology.

They are doing studies now to see exactly how the material stops projectiles so well.....the person that developed it should know this.

That's why soldiers are dying, weak body armor. Get the Vietnam era shell body armor and it protects even against high caliber.

Re: Bullet-proof clothing - A paper-thin material to stop bullets
To help you all understand how this material works so that you may wrap your mind around this (no pun intended).
This nano-material is designed to take the impact of the projectile and focalize it into a very tiny area, because of this the shockwave is dissipated over the layers of the material thereby making the impact millions of times less effective. The nano-tubes have formation memory and fill in around the projectile capturing it in its original position. This also allows for ballistic examination later by Forensics Labs, and use of course in criminal action or evidence gathering.

Because the nano-material is several hundred layers thick and the nano-material transfers’ energy through resonance from one particle structure to the next, it thereby nullifies the bullets effectiveness and damage to soft tissue and skeletal structure of impact point.

Hope this helps you understand better the properties of this matter.

Re: Bullet-proof clothing - A paper-thin material to stop bullets
I've seen the results of being shot with a vest on, and this does not sound good. A vest will save your life, but it not going save you from the damage of the impact. A thinner material will give you a localized impact, meaning more damage. Depending on where you are shot, you may or may not survive. That is why the inventor of the vest always put a stack of magazines under the vest befor he was shot. It's all about dissapating the impact.
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Like Captain Americas shield then.

Cor blimey, they've only gone and done it.

Anyway, the uses for this material could be far reaching.

Good stuff OP.

Re: Bullet-proof clothing - A paper-thin material to stop bullets
Bear in mind that it's probably bullshit. For example, to stop a rifle bullet, you need a tank. A 7.62 NATO round can even penetrate the armor on an M113 APC from close range. So don't go naively believing claims of things being bulletproof until you see a real test of it stopping bullets.
