The storm cycle is continuing over Southern B.C. today. Satellite imagery shows a strong low pressure area crossing the B.C. South Coast carrying ample moisture. Rain over 50 mm is expected today in the Fraser Valley and the Howe Sound region. South to southeast winds of 70 gusting 90 km/h near Juan de Fuca strait affecting the Gulf Islands and parts of Victoria will spread later this morning to Georgia strait and begin to affect the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley regions. Winds will diminish later this evening but expect another bout of strong southeast winds across the entire South Coast on Tuesday, as yet another significant low barrels up towards Northern Vancouver Island

Pacific Northwest Seismic Network

Recent earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest, as of Monday morning.

Monday morning a minor 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Portland-Vancouver area. The quake's epicenter was reported on the Washington side of the border, under the Columbia River between Vancouver and Portland.

John Vidale, the director of the University of Washington's Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, said the quake was slightly larger than original numbers reported.

“3.2 is the number we ended up with. It started out about a 3 and our second estimate was a little bigger," he said. "Turns out there have been about 5 to 10 earthquakes similar to that one in that place over the years as we’ve been watching"

Vidale said that because this earthquake was about 15 miles deep, not many people felt it. He said no injuries or damages were reported.

Re: MASSIVE WINTER STORM FOR PACIFIC NORTH WEST, LOW PRESSURE TO AFFECT CASCADIA.....
The Columbus Day Storm of 1962 (also known as the Big Blow, and originally as Typhoon Freda) was an extratropical cyclone that struck the Pacific Northwest coast of the United States on October 12, 1962. The storm ranks among the most intense to strike the region since at least 1948, likely since the January 9, 1880 "Great Gale" and snowstorm. The storm is a contender for the title of most powerful extratropical cyclone recorded in the U.S. in the 20th century; with respect to wind velocity, it is unmatched by the March 1993 "Storm of the Century" and the "1991 Halloween Nor’easter" ("The Perfect Storm"). The system brought strong winds to the Pacific Northwest and southwest Canada, and was linked to 46 fatalities in the northwest and Northern California resulting from heavy rains and mudslides.

The winds have been heavy and the rain has been continuous... typical Washington around this time of year. We get one or two of these heavy windstorms typically a year. Still in all, we lost power last night for a moment and lights have been flickering all day.

As for an earthquake? I am not sure I understand why it would cause an earthquake, seems a bit odd.

It’s been raining a lot in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon and northern California) for the past week. Some places have received upwards of two inches of rain; mountain areas have logged upwards of five inches (Fig. 1). More significant stormy weather arrives today and will continue on and off for the rest of Thanksgiving week (Fig. 2).

The culprit is a large polar vortex located in the Gulf of Alaska. The storm, more than a thousand miles across (Fig. 3) makes Hurricane/Storm Sandy pale by comparison. Making matters worse have been a series of smaller scale storm systems which have slammed the Pacific Northwest and parts of southwestern Canada. Today, the focus shifts to Oregon where a new, smaller storm system and associated jet stream will bring torrential rains. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast calls for as much as 8 inches of rain in some places the next 24-hours and up to 10 inches for the next five days
