I think it is worth noting that the Earth passes through the galactic plane (otherwise known as the gravitational disc formed by the black hole at the center of our galaxy) between the 7 year period of 2008-2015. As the Mayans correctly noted, this cycle takes 26,000 years to complete. It is also worth noting that there will be a triple alignment with the center of the galaxy - the Sun, the Earth, and Venus - on Dec 21, 2012. Whether something cataclysmic happens on that day or not does not change the fact that we are currently passing through the galactic plane, a point where the gravitational force upon the Earth multiplies due to the black hole mentioned above. Interesting times ahead, to say the least.

I'm sorry - I misspoke. The triple alignment on 21 Dec is the center of the galaxy, the sun, and the earth. The Venus transit was what I was thinking of - in which the Sun, the Earth, and Venus aligned on June 5th of this year. That particular alignment won't happen again until 2117.
