A year and a half later, Left with tornado damage, Ala town blaming FEMA
[link to hosted.ap.org]

CORDOVA, Ala. (AP) -- Main Street in this old mill town looks about the same as it did the day after tornadoes killed about 250 people across Alabama a year and a half ago: Battered red bricks and broken glass litter the pavement, and the buildings still standing are rickety and roofless.

The entire one-block downtown, still deemed unsafe, remains sealed off by a chain-link fence. City officials blame the Federal Emergency Management Agency, saying the money to demolish skeletons of the old buildings is mired in miles of red tape.

When one request for photos or historical documentation is met, FEMA makes another, the mayor and others in this town of 2,100 say. One crop of workers is replaced by another, forcing locals to constantly explain their problems to new people.

----

So the FEMA delays with Sandy are really more the norm than Obama would have us believe. This in Alabama happened under his watch as well and we are still waiting after all this time.

FEMA apparently likes to claim building have some historical value or meaning as an excuse for not supplying the funding they normally do for demolition. None of these were listed in any historical register and yet the funds are still withheld for 2 years.

And the idiots continue to support the lies and insanity. Well, New York - being the "liberal bastion" that it is will soon learn the folly of their ways...They only think it's inconvenient now - give it about another 6 months.
Within the surreal depths of "reality" lies the truth.

Here at the NJ Shore, we haven't seen much of FEMA. Just as well I guess.

yep. Dunno what the OP is whining about. Folks shouldn't be waiting for handouts from the Feds. All these folks wanting handouts are what is bankrupting this country. Romney had it right about getting rid of FEMA - communities can rebuild on their own if they just buckle down and get to work like the did in the old days

By federal government, do you mean that same one that just pocketed the money from the fines of the BP oil spill? None for us effected, all for feds!

Except that FEMA is now declaring some kind of historical value to these buildings and I don't think the locals would even be allowed to knock them down themselves now. FEMA declares the disaster areas, doncha know, condemns under their authority.

Why are they waiting for permission to repair things?

Really, if they don't have the money, do it by volunteer instead.

What if there was no government at all? What would the town do then, to repair the damage?

They can't override FEMA now that FEMA is involved. It's FEMA that declares things uninhabitable after an area is declared a disaster area.

They will have to get some kind of exemption from FEMA to do it themselves and now FEMA is blathering about historical buildings. Usually those have to be restored.

Yes, they would be much better off to have never got FEMA involved at all.

Some construction company would likely have demolished the building for the bricks if FEMA had not been in charge,

Try looking in Monmouth County then.

They have commandeered a several story building complex that use to be Avaya's main headquarters. Now it's FEMA's and it will be in operation for THE NEXT 1.5 to 2 YEARS!!!

I received confirmation from a local police officer.

They already have a tent city up at Monmouth Racetrack as well. (see link below).

Guess what? Whoever is monitoring the internet would NOT let this image to be viewed on the screen. I looked at the source code and found where it was sitting on their server and gave you a direct link.

The banksters don't plan on lending any money to rebuild anything. This gives you a hint as to what's coming down the pipeline - as in, much more massive destruction. They know rebuilding is a lose/lose for them as they will soon be bunker bound.

Watch and learn.

Oh, wow! Once they get their clutches in a location, it's very hard to get them out!
