ARKstorm Hitting PNW.....now...More To Come
disregard source...sorry it was the first link i got...

[link to www.theweatherspace.com]

but this is some SHIT, people...i've been trying to share info on the ARKstorms for a couple years now.

"An upper level low is forming south of Alaska, which is keeping intact through the week for major storms to continue to hit the Pacific Northwest in what is known as an 'Atmospheric River scenario', or a river of tropical moisture. (BUT IT'S COMING OUT OF ALASKA...not sure i understand this)

Flooding, thunderstorms, and strong winds will continue to pound the Oregon and Washington areas through this week, with the storm split in various pieces."

now look at the intellicast sat (note the chemclouds heading into mexico off the pacific, wow how obvious can it get!)

[link to www.intellicast.com]

pull it over to the pacific/pnw/west coast.

THAT is what an Atmospheric River looks like.

A film describing the ARkStorm scenario by director, Theo Alexopolous, and DesignMatters, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. The ARkStorm scenario led by the USGS and hundreds of scientists and experts from many disciplines details impacts of a scientifically plausible storm similar to the Great California Storm of 1862 in the modern day. The scenario led to several important scientific advancements and will be used by emergency and resource managers to improve partnerships and emergency preparedness.

Re: ARKstorm Hitting PNW.....now...More To Come
now i am NOT saying this storm is as gnarly as what is depicted in the mock-up...however, it is a phenomenon that is most interesting to observe in real-time.

boots on the ground pdx:

hella rainy, big gusts of wind but not anything i'd think of as mega, don't know how it is on the coast. was really cold yesterday, warmer today.

we've had clouds from the south to north for a couple months, with the chem layer heading east. a couple times i noticed sats showing our weather coming from the west and outside the clouds said different....a bit odd.

this rain is coming from the west.

also not to forget portland oregon had a tornado warning active last night, and the night before the SF bay area did.

how's the rest of the PNW? puff puff WA, do you think this storm is very impressive in the seattle area?

....i amend...it's pissing rain out there! wind picking up. pretty impressive gusts and the crows are staying out of the sky, earlier they were doing all kinds of wild acrobatics in the wind but i guess it's gotten a bit rough for them.

the rings are going STRONG today! they generally come out of a private/small airport towards beaverton but pretty close to PDX. super glad we have that fema concentration camp on the coast! chuckle

there are flood warnings up, judging by wundermap's warning chart. looks like a warning of 2 feet over flood stage at nehalem river, near foss, oregon...

looking at the warmer water and the cold front from alaska i'm starting to see how we had a tornado warning last night.

me, i'm stoked cause i am about to move into a place where there's a massive water filtration system, garden, huge stockpile of food (A QUARTER TON OF RICE????)...and i have my bug out bag.

lights just flickered...wonder if we'll lose power today.

what's interesting about this storm is

a) the tropical aspect mixing with the cold front dropping out of the bering sea...hence a tornado warning FOR PORTLAND CITY last night. also tornado warnings in the sf bay area the night before.

b) this IS an ARKstorm, and it is what usgs and a ton of scientists have predicted as being far more destructive to cali/west coast than even a massive earthquake.

Extensive flooding results. In many cases flooding overwhelms the state’s flood-protection system, which is typically designed to resist 100- to 200-year runoffs. The Central Valley experiences hypothetical flooding 300 miles long and 20 or more miles wide. Serious flooding also occurs in Orange County, Los Angeles County, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay area, and other coastal communities. Windspeeds in some places reach 125 miles per hour, hurricane-force winds. Across wider areas of the state, winds reach 60 miles per hour. Hundreds of landslides damage roads, highways, and homes. Property damage exceeds $300 billion, most from flooding. Demand surge (an increase in labor rates and other repair costs after major natural disasters) could increase property losses by 20 percent. Agricultural losses and other costs to repair lifelines, dewater (drain) flooded islands, and repair damage from landslides, brings the total direct property loss to nearly $400 billion, of which $20 to $30 billion would be recoverable through public and commercial insurance. Power, water, sewer, and other lifelines experience damage that takes weeks or months to restore. Flooding evacuation could involve 1.5 million residents in the inland region and delta counties. Business interruption costs reach $325 billion in addition to the $400 billion property repair costs, meaning that an ARkStorm could cost on the order of $725 billion, which is nearly 3 times the loss deemed to be realistic by the ShakeOut authors for a severe southern California earthquake, an event with roughly the same annual occurrence probability.

Atmospheric Rivers (AR) are relatively narrow regions in the atmosphere that are responsible for most of the horizontal transport of water vapor outside of the tropics. While ARs come in many shapes and sizes, those that contain the largest amounts of water vapor, the strongest winds, and stall over watersheds vulnerable to flooding, can create extreme rainfall and floods. These events can disrupt travel, induce mud slides, and cause catastrophic damage to life and property. However, not all ARs cause damage – most are weak, and simply provide beneficial rain or snow that is crucial to water supply.

Scientists Cite "Atmospheric River" for Near Continuous Rain
It has happened before. Consider the winter of 1861-1862 -- it rained for 45 consecutive days
By Patrick Healy
| Wednesday, Dec 22, 2010 | Updated 9:09 AM PST

and in october:

So THAT'S why we've been getting so much rain! Scientists find 'atmospheric rivers' in the sky which hit Britain with 1,000 times more water than the Thames

Giant ribbons of moist air flowing north from the tropics bring heavy rain
Some 'rivers' carry as much water as the Amazon
Ribbons blamed for worst 10 winter floods to hit Britain since 1970
Researchers say they are also linked to the country's recent wet summers

Wet, blustery storms headed for Western Washington

It's too early to be definitive, but at least one leading climate model is suggesting very heavy rain could lash the region for several days, beginning Friday. Conditions seem to be setting up for what's called an atmospheric river — a fierce band of precipitation that could unleash 5 to 10 inches of rain in the mountains, Mass said.

thanks for that link...washington advisory:

CUMULATIVE RAINFALL OVER THE LAST WEEK HAS SOAKED SOILS TO THE POINT WHERE THE WASHINGTON LANDSLIDE RISK LEVEL WAS MODERATE. THE PREDICTED RAINFALL COULD RAISE THE LEVEL TO HIGH. THE HIGHER THE RISK LEVEL...THE MORE NUMEROUS THE LANDSLIDES ARE LIKELY TO BE.

AREAS ABOVE 5000 FEET IN ELEVATION AND TO NEAR 3000 FEET IN THE CASCADES PASSES WILL SEE MOSTLY SNOW AND NOT BE AFFECTED.

WITH AN ELEVATED LANDSLIDE RISK...RAINFALL INDUCED LANDSLIDES ARE POSSIBLE DURING BURSTS OF INTENSE RAINFALL OR WHEN THERE IS HEAVY RAINFALL OVER A PERIOD OF A DAY OR TWO AS NOTED IN THE FORECAST ELEVATED RISK LEVEL. A GRADUALLY DIMINISHING RISK OF LANDSLIDES WILL CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL DAYS AFTER THE RAIN ENDS. AREAS MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO LANDSLIDES UNDER THESE CONDITIONS ARE STEEP COASTAL BLUFFS AND OTHER STEEP HILLSIDES.

Re: ARKstorm Hitting PNW.....now...More To Come
We had some descent wind earlier, and a large limb did some serious damage to the greenhouse. It's reparable and didn't hit the house, so all is good.

Otherwise, it's only good here for the ducks. They are even getting tired of the rain and are going indoors to rest. The river is at it's bank, so I can assume that I'm going to have to deal with what the flood does to the farm again.

I'd probably stay dryer standing in my shower then outside.

The crazy thing is that this morning there was a lull. The wind stopped, the rain stopped, and the temperature rose quite a bit. I expected to wake up to a cold house, because I didn't bank the woodstove before bed, but it was quite toasty here. I can understand where the tornadoes warnings came from with that weirdness.
