AIDS is mainly detected by looking for anti-AIDS antibodies.
Children inherit maternal antibodies.
After several months, they lose the antibodies.
Hence it "appears" they recovered from AIDS.
When in fact they never got it from Mom in the first place.

Alternately... they may have indeed caught the virus.
But, maternal antibodies prevented it from taking hold.
(In effect the kids were naturally vaccinated).
And, again, after several months, they lose the maternal antibodies.
But the AIDS is gone by then.
