27 Animals In 'Hobbit' Movie Died At Farm Where They Were Housed

A promotion for J.R.R. Tolkien's classic, which is now being made into a movie trilogy, at the Frankfurt Book Fair last month.Just days before the movie's premiere, there's word that during the filming of director Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as many as 27 animals used in its production died at the farm in New Zealand where they were housed.

A spokesman for director Peter Jackson has confirmed an unspecified number of deaths related to conditions on a Wellington farm. Horses, goats and sheep were among the casualties, he told the AP. He said that when production supervisors learned of the conditions they quickly moved to fix them.

Still, the animal-rights group PETA said that as a result of the news it will protest several premieres of the film, produced by New Line and released by Warner Bros. around the world

gonna be very hard for me to watch the film now, animal cruelty disgusts me. most ppl wont give a shit but thanks for the heads up. i think this is important that the producers dont get away this this senseless negligence.

In a joint statement with the other producers on the fantasy films, Jackson said that great pains and hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent to provide good care for the animals on the picture. He said allegations that animals were mistreated off the set were only now being brought to the producers' attention.

I read that today. Awful. They did admit to a couple of the animals that died unnecessarily, which I was surprised. But we know it was more. Really sad.
