Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13612831 The article at [link to www.nasa.gov] discusses how they found a possible brown dwarf or planet 13 times the size of Jupiter....orbiting its companion star...was detected in the infrared wavelengths...170 light years from Earth. "Comparing the two images taken half a year apart showed that Kappa And b exhibits the same motion across the sky as its host star, which proves that the two objects are gravitationally bound and traveling together through space." [link to www.nasa.gov] I mean I'm not saying this is Niburu...but I find it funny that they don't mention what orbit it takes. They have been studying it for about a year, but wait until today to mention it....and neglect to mention its orbit. I'm not running to the hills just yet, because if something like this was incoming prepping would be pointless there isn't much we could do about it. I read the press release too, no mention of its exact trajectory or orbit. Anyone care to see if I missed anything? It's my first thread, please be nice even though Im slipping into Nibirutard-fear land as we speak. ![]() I actually believe that Nibiru exists but whether we'll see it in our lifetimes is another matter. | Anonymous Coward User ID: 9266723 11/19/2012 06:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Relevant point of article: Kappa And b orbits its star at a projected distance of 55 times Earth's average distance from the sun and about 1.8 times as far as Neptune; the actual distance depends on how the system is oriented to our line of sight, which is not precisely known. The object has a temperature of about 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit (1,400 Celsius) and would appear bright red if seen up close by the human eye. It orbits it's start at a distance of 55 AU. There are 63115 AU in a light year. The star it's orbiting is 168 light years away from Earth. So yeah, it's never coming close. |

According to the article, Kappa And b is twice as far from the primary as Neptune is from the Sun, so the period of Kappa And b is going to be on the order of hundreds of years. It won't have moved enough along its orbit in the half year of study to be able to determine any details about that orbit. |

Completely appropriate response to your idiotic thread, OP. So Nasa is run by idiots? They just said themselves that a super massive brown dwarf, visible in the infrared spectrum, orbiting its companion star, traveling thru space....only 170 light years from Earth...sounds like a "Nibiru". But if denying that a rogue super planet COULD exist (even though NASA just said so) helps you sleep at night more power to you. I was just asking for help understanding the article (learning disability) to see if I missed its orbit, or did they purposely leave it out. So if you have nothing to add why did you even bother? |

They do move in space but relative to the planets that orbit it? Or am I misunderstanding how they drift? I would assume if our path crossed with anything this size solar system chaos would ensue. Does anyone know if a brown dwarf would have the same density or gravitational pull equal to or less than Jupiter? |
