Re: To Match Walton Heirs' Fortune, You'd Need to Work at Walmart for 7 Million Years
Wal-Mart has damaged the United States at an incredible level. Sure, K-Mart and Target have the same business models (by the way, Target's wages are far higher and they do not discriminate when promoting from within) but they have not caused near the damage.

In Urban areas: Wal-Mart opens a store. A bunch of small business stores close up and other franchises move in (CVS, McDonalds, etc.) around it to pick up Wal-Mart's business. Then, Wal-Mart closes their (massive) store and moves it 1.5 miles south, taking out ALL of the other (sometimes privately owned!) franchises with it. Then, you have a gigantic empty building with a massive empty parking lot and 5-10 empty stores with their own parking lots all around. Wal-Mart just killed a micro-economy. Nobody will ever buy an old Wal-Mart building because they are just too big, the only thing they could be used for is Wal-Mart.

In Rural areas: When Wal-Mart moves into a small town, they take out every business with them, guaranteed. All small businesses close and all workers go to work at Wal-Mart. I've seen Wal-Mart make a move like that, and then move out of a town 7 years later completely killing the town.

Wal-Mart is the perfect example of why capitalism is dangerous and should be limited. No company should be that big. Even if you put a McDonalds in a town of 1500 people, it doesn't mean people are going to go there for all of their nourishment. There is no other retail company that is on the same level as Wal-Mart in this world. I'm just glad that where I live (Japan) the government limited Wal-Mart (they operate under the name of Seiyu here) to smaller grocery stores (and that's IT..)

TL;DR Wal-Mart sucks

Capitalism, bitch!

Get the fuck over it.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

I'm a Reagan Republican and have never voted Democrat. I work for Wal-Mart and they could care less about the associates that do the heavy lifting. It was a better company before Sam died. They took pride in selling American-made goods and they cared more for their workers. They could care less now. They deserve what's coming to them.

Pay and working conditions are based on the availability of labor. A company will pay just enough to attract just enough of the properly skilled staff. This is economics 101. I think your real complaint should be the fact that immigration policy has increased the unskilled labor pool to the point where lesser pay and lesser working conditions are accetpable. A company like Walmart is an economic force, less than a business. A small business can make non optimal decisions based on moral or ethical judgements. A company as large as Walmart has become a "system" whose polices are molded by overall economic forces, and is a reflection of macro economic foces at work.

Man, that would be miserable - being stuck at Walmart for 7 million years. I'd take the lake of fire over that.

I knew I opened up a can of worms starting this thread, but I think the workers deserve at least better pay. The company could afford to at least give them that.

WalMart has also made many thousands of people into millionaires.

Sam Walton was a decent man who still drove an old pick-up truck when he had a dozen stores.

The second generation Waltons have been brought up with money, and that's often a difficult predicament to overcome---almost a curse actually.
 Quoting: MuzzleBreak

And how is turning a bunch of people, who already had money, into Millionaires building a society where we are rewarded for our hard work, as most of you seem to be preaching?

It's got to be absolutely tiring work phoning up your brokerage and placing a bet, doesn't it. Defintely more tiring, and requiring more skill than it takes to be a warehouse laborer. Those fithly fucking laborers. Moving everything and keeping everything organized for everyone, somehow thinking they've actually put in enough hard work have a pile of unused cash stashed in the bank. They'd probably just gamble with it anyways.

Holy Shit! I've seen the light! I must turn from my heathen socialist ways! The ones doing the hard work are the lazy ones, who are so insignificant that I can go ahead and break their backs, fire them, and then make the state pay for them. Ho Ho Ha Ha, it's brilliant! And then when the state wants ME to pay for them with my taxes, I'll just hire a thousand accountants to write everything off and pay nothing anyways!

I think I'm going to like this new ME, because it's all about ME! ME. ME. ME. ME ME ME. I love ME now! Me is entitled to more Money!

The HR department will take care of the rest of you.

That is insane wealth. They do not even pay their employees a living wage. Average Wal-Mart salary is $14,500 a year.

well that's minimum wage @ a 40 hour week

what do you want for being a walmart worker for fucks sake?

 Quoting: ^TrInItY^

Really ??? How about reading the article. So while you are sanctioning minimum wage, a wage which is impossible to support a family on... THIS is what people are doing to make up the shortfall.... YOUR money. So yes, they SHOULD get paid more so that they are paid a living wage and NOT having to take taxpayers money.

But, if it is ok with you that taxpayers absolve the Wal-Mart from paying a living wage, KNOWING that the state and federal governments will pick up the tab....

"In 2004, a year in which Wal-Mart reported $9.1 billion in profits, the retailer's California employees collected $86 million in public assistance, according to researchers at the University of California-Berkeley. Other studies have revealed widespread use of publicly funded health care by Wal-Mart employees in numerous states. In 2004, Democratic staffers of the House education and workforce committee calculated that each 200-employee Wal-Mart store costs taxpayers an average of more than $400,000 a year, based on entitlements ranging from energy-assistance grants to Medicaid to food stamps to WIC—the federal program that provides food to low-income women with children."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27421594

How is any of this Walmarts responsibility? You don't have to work there. you don't like pay, go work for a mom and pop store and see what your pay and benefits are like there.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21252322

Not the point, stupid person. The point is that I am QUITE sure that it is a part of Walmat's business model to not worry much about low wages FULL well knowing that YOU and I will pick up the tab. The point, also stupid person, is that whether or not A or B moves on to another job, someone else will take their place and someone else will again need public assistance just to make do. So no mater "who" moves on, the entire business model relies on the welfare state to keep people happy enough to not rebel.

Oh, I forgot... this is GLP where in one thread people rant about the welfare state and lazy people, and the next fail to see WHY there is a welfare state when families such as this one becomes insanely rich, and complain in one thread about unemployment and jobs going overseas and then blame the worker in threads like these as if they have anything to do with families such as these becoming rich off of barely subsistence living wages. I get it.... The Right/Left double standard!

Walmart EBIT margin is 6% so that little $1,500,000,000 in employee theft will take 25,000,000,000 in sales to recover! Yeah much bigger picture!

And this is where you dumb as fuck libtards don't get it. Its all about incentive. If someone who is lazy, or would rather smoke pot most of the day, or has 6 kids by the time they are 25, or any one of the million other sob stories, gets rewarded for their poor choices or behavior, then you will over time have a degenerating society. Crappy jobs and poor pay are the punishment or disincentive for poor choices. Good pay and good jobs are reward for good choices and habits. Having the top 1% give away their money to all lower class individuals, with no litmus test of acheivement in order to qualify, will lead to the destruction of our country.

Re: To Match Walton Heirs' Fortune, You'd Need to Work at Walmart for 7 Million Years
...

I am not speaking of entry level employees. I'm speaking of 60 year old women who have worked their nails off for Wal-Mart for many years. There are lots of honest long-term employees that don't get paid much and now they are having benefits cut. You sir are the idiot for buying into the company's line.

No I'm the guy who took the initiative to build a few companies from ground up and know exactly what happens. Don't even try to play the victim! If people like me and other business owners did not take the risk you would be left in the dark corner beating off waiting for "them" to come save you. But just wait because that time is comming. The risk takers are done. Can you tell me the GDP of the US government? I can fucking zero! They produce NO revenue yet over 40% of the employees in the US are government employees feeding off the 60% that actually produce revenue. Good god people take an economics class. You will all starve, at least understand why this WILL happen!

I'm no lefty man. I voted for Romney and he was not nearly as conservative as I wanted him to be. I know the government is worthless. You don't have to persuade me. But this isn't about government. Its about another big monolithic beast. I'm a capitalist but not a corporatist. There is a difference. By the way, I graduated summa cum laude at my college. That means I made an A in economics.

I work for Wal-mart because I worked in their information systems division in Bentonville but had to move back to Georgia because my parents and my wife's parents became ill and we decided it was more important to be near family rather than make a lot of money. So I work in the stores now. You got a problem with that?

As I said, they treat their hourly employees like shit and I stand by that comment.

A company with 2,000,000 employees that is what you get, just way to big to be personal not to mention you can't be human or some dumb ass employee might sue you....
My last business I had 250 employees and had to figure out how to bring in $1,000,000 a week! It got to be a body shop so I sold it.... All business grows to that point.... You should know this....

I do and know having your own business is a very risky endeavor. I applaud you for taking those risks. All I'm saying is I wish people would stop supporting a business that decides to stay open on Thanksgiving. I will not be working with Wal-Mart much longer as I have other options available and I do not wish to enable the Beast any further. Other decent people that work for Wal-Mart do not have that option and I feel for them. Best of luck to you on any future endeavors.

Appreciate that and good luck to and a Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm also a veteran so I have always worked holidays just like, EMS, police, firefighters, power company employees, gas station employees, network administrators, and other essential skilled workers... Notice the executive branch of the government is not on that list...... Hmm

Re: To Match Walton Heirs' Fortune, You'd Need to Work at Walmart for 7 Million Years
I don't and haven't worked at Walmart, but my mom does.

I'll say this her biggest complaint working there isn't her pay, her bosses or her coworkers, it's the customers! I swear she could have a best seller with the crap she's seen and put up with that the customers do/say etc.

As for her pay, several years ago she was making around 13/14 an hour. That may have been lowered, but I doubt it, she probably hasn't received any real raises in the past years either. She is terminal and works at Walmart still because of the insurance they provide is actually quite good.

I see some people who work there have complaints about the company, I'm going to assume that it must depend on the store you work for. My mom has always said that management has always been understanding about her numerous doctor's appointments and as her illness has progressed agreeing to drop her hours, as of now she is working the minimum so she can keep her insurance.

One other thing not sure if they do this still, but they used to give out bonuses around Christmas time, I know one year she received almost 600 for a bonus.
