I think what the op was alluding to was the fact that we as a nation do not have a "unique" name, - such as Mexico, or Brazil, (e.g, Mexico's official name is; Estados Unidos Mexicanos de Norte America = United Mexican States of North America). Not that it matters to me one way or the other, the rest of the world seems to knows who we are - no confusion as far as I can tell.

I call people who live in United States of America (Estados Unidos da América in portuguese). as "estadunidense" (have no idea how i would translate it to english), but on the internet i usually say american to avoid problem.

It does not mean i hate the U.S.A, i just think strange calling them americanos (americans), since i am one too.

It would be like if only germans, for example, could be called europeans in the Europe.
