Others began calling us Americans. It made sense at the time because until very recently the US was the only country over here that amounted to shit on the world scene. Finally, after a century and a half of nurturing the rest of the backwards little disease infested countries, some of them have moved into the modern age.

I have addressed this time and time again. Canadians CAN call themselves American...they live in North America.

Citizens of the U.S. can call themselves American...they live in North America.

Mexicans can call themselves AMERICAN as they live in North America.

ALL of SOUTH America can call themselves American as they live in South America.

I have said this again and again and can not see how this OP thinks anyone from North or South America is anything BUT American. There are ONLY seven continents and they (north and south americans) are NOT from any other continent but one of these two. THEREFORE they are NOT EUROPEAN, ASIAN, Australian, Afrian or Antartican...they are AMERICAN.

Furthermore, the U.S.A. stands for UNITED STATES OF America and therefore can call themselves AMERICAN for short. Just as ANYONE in the European continent can call themselves EUROPEAN. They would say I am a EUROPEAN UNION citizen, but EUROPEAN.

It doesn't really because Baseball is an American past-time, and no team in the world would be able to beat our world series champs. They simply are the best. Just like our basketball teams, american football teams, and NHL teams are the best (nhl thanks to Canada being our neighbors :))
