Alexander Scourby, the sublimest voice-for-hire ever, here gives his honey-toned authority to a hilariously heavy-handed piece of mid-50s propaganda. The contents are almost entirely public-domain stock-footage from 70-80 years ago.
This is fascinating as a piece of "soft" Red propaganda, the kind that tries to convince us that the Commie agenda is perfectly in tune with American patriotism (cf. Mother Bloor, and the so-called "Abraham Lincoln Brigade"). The filmmakers equate opposition to the New Deal with both Fascism and Huey Long populism. When we finally see FDR on the verdant grounds of Hyde Park, we hear the uplifting showtune, "It's Delightful, It's Delicious, It's De-Lovely," by Cole Porter. After 1950, Commie propagandists had to soft-pedal their party line. Instead of telling us about the free health care and big dams in Stalin's paradise, they focused on attacking American nationalism of the 1930s. |
