NO ONE forces anyone to work or shop at Wal-Mart. That's what a free market economy offers us. DON'T like them, their practices or their products, DON'T shop there... Simple enough for you??? Pro-union, eh? One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one. Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway. Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?. . .J. Handy |

Quoting: milehighmike Simple enough for you??? No EMOTION, just the facts... Sales taxes from businesses in my town go towards funding the public school system. The new Wal-Mart just got a tax exemption. The store gets to keep the first $2 million in sales taxes that it takes in. The schools in my town just lost $2 million in funding. Even if I don't shop at Wal-Mart or work at Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart is taking funding from my kids' school. How will we make up the difference? By raising taxes on the rest of us and growing Government. Stop pretending we've got a free market economy. Wal-Mart literally paid millions over ten years to local lobbying groups to get the city and county councils to approve the new store. If you shop at Wal-Mart then you are pro Big Government and pro lobbying industry. |

Pro-living wage. Corporations that make billions every year should not have to fund their operations with Big Government handouts. It appears to me that your issue is with your local government over their biz dev decisions and in the long-term view the Wal-Mart locations will generate FAR more revenue (because of sales volumes) than the stores they replace., This is a short-term issue from a sales tax perspective. Define "living wage" for us??? "Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. I hate to pop your bubble OP but corporations are not set up to give people benefits and make people wealthy. Corporations are set up to make a profit. When you and lefty friends have completely destroyed all US corporations the only thing left will be foreign corporations controlling our life. |

If you shop at Wal-Mart then you are pro Big Government and pro lobbying industry. How did the schools "lose" anything? The first two million exemption is on sales that HAVEN'T occurred yet (assuming the store is NOT yet opened). The increased payroll taxes, permits, fees, etc. will likely greatly increase local revenues from the store in question, an investment... AGAIN, this is NOT an "emotional issue" (only because you're trying really hard to make it one...) "Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. You do realize that to bring every walmart employee's salary up above the poverty line would cost more than walmart made last year, per year. You do realize that to do it without going bankrupt Walmart would have to raise their prices by about 17 cents per item sold. You do realize that poor people who work at walmart shop at walmart, and near half the raise you give them would be used to pay the up-charge, effectively taking away half of what you gave them. You do realize that the tens of millions of other poor people, the people who shop at walmart, would be the ones to foot the bill for this. you would make tens of millions of people poorer by raising Walmarts prices in order to make a couple million people less poor. if the last 50 years has not already educated you, Throwing money at problems does not solve them. We have givens trillions of dollars to the poor in food stamps and welfare over the last several decades, and we have raised the minimum wage many times. In the end, we have more poor people than we had before. Throwing money at the problem does not work, there is not enough money out there to solve the problem. The fruits of our labors increase the economy, when people create things, they grow the economy, when a majority are not creating things, but instead servicing others, or sitting on their butts, there is not enough creation to make enough to go around. That is the true issue we have at the moment! ![]() |
