Operation with active corners is like OS-X expose .. i love OS-X expose because it works ... Win 7 active corners are f.. broken. The new Office 365 (or whatever) i tested in my workplace is a mess.. stay the f. away from it and use something useful and cheaper like LibreOffice. It is a bit faster on my test-Netbook than Win 7. M$ should have stopped with Win XP and integrated an usable Desktop Search into it. Done. OMG that is my BIGGEST pet peeve about W7... the search ABSOLUTELY sucks. |

Another really good flavor of linux that has all the codecs you need to play videos and works out of the box normally is pclinuxos. I much prefer it to ubuntu. But I do have all 3, pclinuxos, ubuntu and pinguy a version of ubuntu that also has all the codecs, and mine is 64 bit. So 3 free downloads and good to go with the live boot to problem solve and test without even needing to install, you can't go wrong, well, until you have to try and unmask a wireless networking driver, and that is best to discover first and get all the walk through helps you'll need printed out before the install. I don't use windows on my computer. I have pclinuxos rock solid and perfect, and pinguy, the best ubuntu flavor to date on 2 different hard drives. Why do people have to get the latest everything when the old works fine? Microsoft wouldn't have made another dime after XP if it were up to me. I guess that is why they don;t give you the discs now so when the computer dies you have to change. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 27794780 11/20/2012 02:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A person has to look also at the lifetime microsoft will support the OS you have. For XP, it is still supported till 2014, and Windows 7 I have not looked it up yet (forget Vista I never considered that either) and Windows 8 is just trying to make it more convenience for such people. I want the computer to do what I want it to do when I want it to do it, not when microsoft or anyone else with their start-up programs think I should bend to their way of thinking. Compared to XP which had about 35 tasks running in Task Manager, I have something like 58 tasks running in Windows 7, half of which I don't even know and a lot of those yes a lot of those are 32-bit programs including Steam, and some of the other stuff running, but I have a 64-bit computer now, not a 32-bit program. I might as well use XP, except for newer games and a computer recording music program I have, since those are 64-bit computer programs, the rest of a lot of it are still only 32-bit programs. I have to go to my ISP provider to get up my e-mail in Windows 7 since I have not figured out Live E-mail whatever Messager program it is, and signing up with Microsoft to use that is will, I did, but then I probably will never use it. I still have to use XP to get my e-mail so far, but I will look into it in Windows 7 or download a program that is a E-mail program of what I consider to be a E-mail program. Hotmail or anything like that (G-mail) is not what I am going to use at any time for any purpose. Simply put, there is spam and garbage on that kind of e-mail stuff and simply put even the ISP has a program to rid yourself of junk mail even. I never receive junk mail in XP with Outlook Express, never, because I never am going to sign up for that kind of stuff anyway on a website for that anyway. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 27794780 11/20/2012 03:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | And I do not leave the Internet Connection on all the time either like some people do, because they can not find out how to start it up when they want to and when they do not want it on, how to turn it off. I found out in Windows 7, jumping through hoops somewhat before I found out, you get up Network and click on Change Adaptors (or something like that) then you get the Local Connection page up (make a shortcut to desktop with that page) and then you can hook up to the Internet when you want to and also after making the connection you can get up the Status page showing how long you been on the Internet and all the bits you are downloading and whether anyone is trying to screw with your computer while you are on because the bits do not move or increase if there is no traffic coming into your computer, only when you get up a website or download a update or something like that otherwise it does not budge on the bit-total while on the Internet. I also turn off my computer when I am not using it also. That can be done, and usually your computer will last longer and all of that also. Clean the dust and dirt out of your computer also during the year, that is not hard to do either buying a compressed can of air spray (gets cold though so let the computer warm back up) or computer circuit cleaner sold at a place like Radio Shack (which cost more nowadays also) to really clean up the electronics of the computer motherboard and add-on boards that you may have (graphics cards and such) and let dry and have a nice clean computer on the inside also. Usually two screws in the back and a phillips screwdriver is all you need to pull off the side of the case of the computer and that will be that also. Windows 8 don't even have a "Start" button so a person has to download one from a group that programmed that so people could have a "Start" button and see the programs you have on your computer and "Search" for a file on the computer or anything like that - maintainence which also has to be done on a computer. If I wanted a MacIntosh computer I buy one, because Apple was always better than Microsoft anyway. And Linux is still not all that accepted, and unless they made it not a hassle to set up the computer with it, does not mean it is better. |

A number of users have taken to social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook to vent their frustration. Many report that their systems have completely crashed as a result of the upgrade. One user went on a diatribe about how, after he installed the new operating system on a "high-end" computer, he found numerous errors and problems, noting "You guys released too early, and I know you are working around the clock to fix issues. But now I'm a man without a functional computer, without Steam, without Office, without even an ability to run ANYTHING correctly." Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20703248 [link to tech.fortune.cnn.com] I cant help it but laugh, you should completely skip this garbage. Stick with win7 or move over to linux. PC bios incompability issues .....window 8 sucks shit as its partialy cloud based( operating system resides elsewere), does not operate with no internet you need umbical cord to microsoft who reads everything you do with it ... linux , here i come! |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 28167052 11/20/2012 05:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Lesson No 1 for Users of MS Windows : NEVER EVER install a new OS as upgrade over the old one. Since Vista one can choose to install a fresh copy, the setup will move the old windows into a folder called "windows.old". All your files are in there, so you can copy them over to the new OS' directories. This way you will make Windows8 work and all is fine. I upgraded three PCs and one Laptop this way and they all work like expected.Even a selfbuilt 2006 AMD Sempron rig that struggled with Windows7 made the transition into the world of mobile apps of w8 and is way faster now, believe it or not. Win8 is not bad. In fact it outperforms Win7 in every aspect and is also a lot safer from what I have seen in the group policy defaults values. It just has a new interface and new commands that you have to learn. But within 2 days or so you know your way around. The transition from Win 3.1 to 95/98/2000/XP was more drastic. Do not compare it to Windows7 any longer. It is more then just the UI, it is a new system, basically it is no longer Windows as you ever knew it before. Desktop Mode is only a app itself, and only to let you run your WinXP/Vista/7 software ( thus far all is working fine, including games from the early 2000's ) |

It was intentionally hobbled by the MS design team so that people who used it would want to buy MS phones and tablets that use a similar UI. The back end is pretty quick though. If they ever put a Win7 skin over it, I'd consider upgrading. 3'rd party apps that make it work more like Win7 are suboptimal because programs that mess with the shell tend to cause more problems than they solve. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 28153862 11/20/2012 05:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The only way I would get windows 8 is if I needed a new computer and the best bargain one I could find had W8 already unfortunately installed on it. Quoting: The Light Under the Door Why on earth would you upgrade? To test it. I had some cheap Netbook around and upgraded to Win 8 Boy .. it is garbage, what were they thinking ? Anyone of them ever used that system for anything useful ? Oh yeah .. it boots faster. Wow .. the last time i booted my Mac was 50 days ago or something. Window 8 is really for touch screen computers. That being said, i'm not upgrading mine. I'm sticking with window 7 like I did with XP for 8 years. Yes, eight years before it died of old age. I still use XP SP3, and Win7. Never had a problem. |
