Departing Space Station Commander Sunita Williams Provides Tour of Orbital Laboratory (video)

In her final days as Commander of the International Space Station, Sunita Williams of NASA recorded an extensive tour of the orbital laboratory and downlinked the video on Nov. 18, just hours before she, cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Flight Engineer Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency departed in their Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft for a landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan. The tour includes scenes of each of the station's modules and research facilities with a running narrative by Williams of the work that has taken place and which is ongoing aboard the orbital outpost.

TMA-07M will replace TMA-05M's docking slot on ISS after they launch in December. TMA-06M remains aboard in the meantime with US astronaut Kevin Ford in command.

Just wondering...why did they NOT wait for the next crew then depart in that device? Why did they depart so "unannounced" in the only escape pod? Did the only woman on board get "evacuated?"

Just correct my thinking if you have some answers I can swallow. thanks

 Quoting: waitn4end

Because there's only two docking ports on ISS dedicated for Soyuz docking (two others are reserved for unmanned cargo vessels to come and go).
Why did they depart so "unannounced" in the only escape pod?
 Quoting: waitn

It wasn't unannounced, from a year before they launched it was scheduled to depart when it did:

It is also not the only "escape pod," and they always take a Soyuz back to earth. TMA-05M left, TMA-06M remains docked to ISS with the other 3 crew members. I already said this, I won't say it again, I'm not here to debunk. I'd ask you to send me questions by PM, but you don't have a star so since you asked, that's the answer. This is how crew changes always work now post-shuttle.

*My bad, I see you do have a star. I'll PM the answer next time. My bad.

It's very cool, just bumping your thread with some info about the follow-on crew. Ford's in command now after Suni, and after him a Canadian will assume command... damned
