H2S will kill you just a breath... By the Tim you feel the burn it is too late.... Nasty shit.... Now if they want to continue to vent all they need to do is install an H2S scrubber then vent and burn the scrubbed natural gas... Basically activated charcoal will scrub the H2S.... We do it all the time in Texas... It is called sour gas...

Thats all fine and well if you have a well thats acting properly. In this case next to impossible. They sealed the well but that won't prevent it from coming up someplace else now. Path of least resistance. That was a panic move. Next Step....? Evacuate everybody.

Fuck this is really bad and not even by the other one. I told you guys a long time ago. That whole area is unstable for hundreds of miles. Get the fuck out of there if you please and thankyou. Please. hf

Hydrogen sulfide does indeed explode. It is far more explosive and flammable than, say, methane, across a much wider range of air mix concentration. It doesn't form sulfuric acid when mixed with water. It is water-soluble and when dissolved into water it is called hydrosulfuric acid (a very weak acid, at ph 6.9). Concentrations of 1 part per thousand are generally immediately lethal, via respiratory paralysis. It is as lethal as hydrogen cyanide, which is used in gas chambers.

Re: Texas Brine reports H2S at sonic well.... Things are ramping up
The purpose of the five wells is to remove gas inside the Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer at 100 feet to 130 feet while the vent well that hit the hydrogen sulfide is the deepest of any of the vent wells at a depth of about 430 feet, parish and company officials have said.

That well also reaches the caprock of the Napoleonville Dome.

from the advocate article posted on page 1

so this gas is coming out of the dome?
and part of the dome ceiling has collapsed, right?
and how much of this gas is in the dome?

Re: Texas Brine reports H2S at sonic well.... Things are ramping up
we knew about the hydrogen sulfide 3 months ago, look at the assumptions thread. I'll go find it.

Here it is: the information starts talking about hydroxide (mine OH) but we couldn't be sure what he was saying.

Thread: Don't make ASSUMPTIONS; try to Understand. (Page 36)
 Quoting: Let Freedom Ring

It was amazing how many people got sucked in to that Assumption thread in terms of the cryptic messages and "codes" - when it appeared they were being played.

Anyone with TRUE insider info would not have engaged in such moronic game-playing on a forum where they could post anonymously.

But moreover, posters who are legitimately concerned about the LA sinkhole situation (which should be EVERY citizen in this country) should have been angered that someone would play games instead of getting to the core of the matter and provide solid, sound evidence and information.

First of all, I live in Texas and know a great deal about the oil industry, and have learned much recently about gas drilling and fracking . . . so as the thread said: Don't make foolish assumptions.

Why don't you leave this particular discussion to those who are rightly concerned and/or those who know far more than you ever will.

If you really believe this topic is laughable, that's your problem, but don't expect others to discount such a wholly serious issue.

H2S can also be produced by reacting hydrogen gas with molten elemental sulfur at about 450 °C.. umm, molten elemental sulfur is primarily found in an active "VOLCANO.!!" ahhh

Re: Texas Brine reports H2S at sonic well.... Things are ramping up
Long-term, low-level exposure may result in fatigue, loss of appetite, headaches, irritability, poor memory, and dizziness. Chronic exposure to low level H2S (around 2 ppm) has been implicated in increased miscarriage and reproductive health issues among Russian and Finnish wood pulp workers,[16] but the reports have not (as of circa 1995) been replicated.

0.00047 ppm or 0.47 ppb is the odor threshold, the point at which 50% of a human panel can detect the presence of the compound.[17]
0.0047 ppm is the recognition threshold, the concentration at which 50% of humans can detect the characteristic odor of hydrogen sulfide,[17] normally described as resembling "a rotten egg".
OSHA has established a permissible exposure limit (PEL)(8 hour time-weighted average(TWA)) of 10 ppm.[18]
10–20 ppm is the borderline concentration for eye irritation.
20 ppm is the acceptable ceiling concentration established by OSHA.[18]
50 ppm is the acceptable maximum peak above the ceiling concentration for an 8 hour shift, with a maximum duration of 10 minutes.[18]
50–100 ppm leads to eye damage.
At 100–150 ppm the olfactory nerve is paralyzed after a few inhalations, and the sense of smell disappears, often together with awareness of danger.[19][20]
320–530 ppm leads to pulmonary edema with the possibility of death.
530–1000 ppm causes strong stimulation of the central nervous system and rapid breathing, leading to loss of breathing.
800 ppm is the lethal concentration for 50% of humans for 5 minutes exposure (LC50).
Concentrations over 1000 ppm cause immediate collapse with loss of breathing, even after inhalation of a single breath.
