I read that as a teenager, its a whole series. There is a movie too.

Its about a mother and her wealthy father is dying but they are not on good terms with each other. i cant remember why. Anyway, also I dont think he knows she has kids or something. She wants in his good graces to get his money, so she moves in with her mother and father, and then she locks her kids in the attic and leaves them there.

she comes up to see them once a day, then eventually forgets to come up at all. The grandma knows about the kids, and she is evil and she tries to poison her grandchildren and kill them.

so the kids are trapped, and basically i think its a teenage girl and boy and two little kids. the littlest boy dies, and the teenage girl and boy get it on with each other - i think there was some incest thing going on but i cant remember, and then i think there was a little girl too who was really sick.

Anyway, they figure out how to break out of the attic and .........

if you want to read it check it out.

OMG...It is DEFINITELY about INCEST idiot person who responded to OP. The entire series is sad and twisted. The brother and sister start out as incestuous as teens and then they produced children.

It is really twisted and sick. So if that is your thing then read it. *sigh*

Yes, by far you should. She also has a stand alone book called My Sweet Audrina, newer books are ghostwritten since she dies some time back. Anyway I've read most her books, they are pretty twisted with yes, incest. But My Sweet Audrina is by far my favorite.

Yikes! You really should have posted a spoiler alert for that.

More SPOILERS below.

The kids were locked in the attic, because they were the product of an incestuous relationship.

When the kids' father died, their destitute mother went crawling back to her fabulously wealthy parents for financial assistance. The kids' rich grandparents were stern, religious types who greatly disapproved of their daughter's incestuous relationship and had disinherited her. The grandmother told her daughter that the grandfather might be able to forgive her and make her an heiress again, but only if he could be led to believe that the daughter's incestuous relationship had produced no children. The grandchildren were a dealbreaker.

The mother hid her children in the spacious attic of the grandparents' mansion, thinking it would only be for a little while. However, as it turned out, granddaddy was very slow to forgive.

The kids, who had previously lived a very happy, normal life prior to their father's death, wound up being locked in the attic for years with their mother's visits becoming less and less frequent. However, they still received visits from their harsh and abusive grandmother, who viewed them as abominations.

End of SPOILERS.

OP, the book is quite disturbing and twisted, but it's impossible to stop reading once you've started. It's an excellent story, though it treads heavily into taboo territory.

I only read "Flowers in the Attic", BTW. I was unable to finish the sequel, because it just became too dark for me to handle.

I read it when I was fairly young, probably around 12-13, might not have been a good idea, lol. I read the others as well. I can't remember what they were called though. I do recall them being pretty sick.

"This cheese is expired by three days, should I eat it?"

"I ate cheese as a teenager. There are lots of cheeses. They put cheese in things too."

Exasperating.

The answer to the question is - if you're an adult with more than 3 brain cells left, no, you should not be reading children's fiction. If you need to read something right now Atlas Shrugged or the Fountainhead would be good - but Unintended Consequences would be better. Want straight fiction? Try; Wizard's First Rule, Without Remorse or 50 Shades of Gray ffs. Flowers in the Attic? Jesus Christ. Might as well read Bunnicula, Where the Red Fern Grows or the Pearl while you're huffing glue.

The novel itself is not bizarre, what is bizarre is how it was promoted and pushed on the public. They shove millions of copies of these books, and then dump truck loads of the unsold filth in dumpster. Sales DO NOT determine what gets printed, just like radio stations really have no idea how many people are listening to their shows. Ratings are all made up, to make you think it's what the public wants.

you see, the devil controls the world by controlling a few hundred thousand people, who are all under telepathic control, they are basically one mind, one entity. E Pluribus Unum, out of many, one.

The thing is, if you kill one of them, which isn't likely to happen, the devil actually becomes STRONGER, because you have freed up some of his mind energy. He has ruled kingdoms for thousands of years, they know what they are doing.

the nazis managed to kill quite a few, and we see the devil is still pretty angry about it.

There is a book that comes before it but they have it listed at the end of the series.

All of her books have a dark twist to them. Once you start reading them you are hooked.

I haven't read her books that were published after her death. They just aren't the same.

Flowers in The Attic is tame and well-written compared to all "her" other books, which were ghostwritten after her death. The other books take the basic insanely dysfunctional family premise and multiply it by a million or so, with the shock value outweighing any storyline, whereas Flowers could have stood on its own without the incest.

The movie is hilariously awful.

She never said. She changed all the names.

The only thing the author has revealed is that she met one of the kids at a university hospital in Virginia.

She also says that the real life kids were locked in the attic for six years. The characters in her book were only locked away for about two years.

I thought she took off and married her rich father's brother and that produced the 4 children that had to be hidden to get the inheritance.

In the second book, after they fled, the older son went on to be a doctor and the younger sister live as a couple and raise the little sister.

All the books are weird if you ask me.
