I'm an atheist. I buy Christmas presents. Take off work. And when people say "Merry Christmas" I say it back.

Not all of us are militant about our atheism just like not all Christians are militant about their faith. Live and let live.

And to quote a Muslim friend of mine when he said he loved Christmas and it was pointed out that he wasn't a Christian...

"But I love presents just like anyone else!"

Well said!

And I would have thought that believers would be pleased that people spend happy, loving times with their family and children.

I guess some believers fail the gift of the ability to share...

Re: Serious question for atheists...please respond...
1. The pagan yuletide celebrations predate Christmas and Christmas was woven into the yuletide celebrations by clever insidious marketing. Most countries have different days for Christmas because they had different yuletide celebrations.

2. Modern Christmas has lost all religious meaning to most people because it has been marketed to death and is just another "special" time of year to convince people to spend money on crap.

3. Religionists think they are more logical than atheists. Classic.

See the whole thing with Christmas trees, gifts etc. all began with pagan traditions, not Christian ones. And to answer your question I say Merry Christmas to Christians, Happy Hanukkah to Jews and Happy Holidays if I am unsure of a person's chosen religion.

Re: Serious question for atheists...please respond...
Amber called her uncle, said "We're up here for the holiday,

Jane and I were having Solstice, now we need a place to stay."

And her Christ-loving uncle watched his wife hang Mary on a tree,

He watched his son hang candy canes all made with red dye number three.

He told his niece, "It's Christmas Eve, I know our life is not your style,"

She said, "Christmas is like Solstice, and we miss you and its been awhile,"

So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able,
And just before the meal was served, hands were held and prayers were said,
Sending hope for peace on earth to all their gods and goddesses.

The food was great, the tree plugged in, the meal had gone without a hitch,

Till Timmy turned to Amber and said, "Is it true that you're a witch?"

His mom jumped up and said, "The pies are burning," and she hit the kitchen,

And it was Jane who spoke, she said, "It's true, your cousin's not a Christian,"

"But we love trees, we love the snow, the friends we have, the world we share,

And you find magic from your God, and we find magic everywhere."

So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able,
And where does magic come from? I think magic's in the learning,
'Cause now when Christians sit with Pagans only pumpkin pies are burning.

When Amber tried to do the dishes, her aunt said, "Really, no, don't bother."

Amber's uncle saw how Amber looked like Tim and like her father.

He thought about his brother, how they hadn't spoken in a year,

He thought he'd call him up and say, "It's Christmas and your daughter's here."

He thought of fathers, sons and brothers, saw his own son tug his sleeve, saying,

"Can I be a Pagan?" Dad said, "We'll discuss it when they leave."

So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able,
Lighting trees in darkness, learning new ways from the old, and
Making sense of history and drawing warmth out of the cold.

Re: Serious question for atheists...please respond...
Dangers of materialism and atheism

« By trying hard to show that there is no God, no providence, no heaven, no hope of life after death, materialists deny everything that gives meaning to human life: the reality of the soul and spirit. They have claimed that religion was the "opium of the people" and that, to be happy, man only needed something to eat, a roof over his head, a family to raise and something to study. What actually happens?

Even when someone has satisfied all the claims of his body, heart and intellect, he is still not satisfied. He neglects to nourish his soul and spirit, so now it is they that demand something!

That is why the use of drugs (that plague that is becoming more and more widespread in the world) is a warning. It is a sign that the soul is trying to make its needs understood: it is suffocating and it uses drugs to free itself, but this so-called liberation is suicidal. Oh, of course, we had to get rid of the opium of religion... and now we have marijuana, heroin, cocaine... Should materialistic philosophy be proud of this result? »

« Why is it that some people's perception, lucidity and clarity of mind increase with age, and even with old-age, and in others they decrease? Because the first have from very early on acquired the habit of connecting, bonding with cosmic Intelligence, they believe in it, they open themselves up to it, they love it, and little by little it reveals itself to them because it is attracted by this love. Whereas the others, who do not acknowledge any Intelligence in the universe, close off the path to true understanding. They are focussed on their sole intelligence, trust only their own intelligence, and because this intelligence is limited, it dries up after a while. People who refuse to acknowledge cosmic Intelligence, who repudiate it, limit their mental faculties. So everyone has a choice: the path taken by all the materialist scientists and philosophers, or the path of the initiates, of the great masters who receive revelations every day because they continually draw from the infinite ocean of cosmic Intelligence. »

« There is nothing to be greatly admired in the many brilliant, wealthy and powerful people who place no importance on the life of the soul and spirit. Because they do not seek spiritual nourishment, which alone could fulfill them, they are like starving beasts; and their ambition, their voracity and their greed finally lead them down paths that are dangerous both for themselves and for those around them.

Unfortunately, many so-called spiritualists do not conduct themselves any better: they try to gain the same success as the materialists by the means given to them by initiatic science. In doing so they betray the most sacred principles and are thus even guiltier than the materialists. It is clear that they are satisfied and proud of succeeding by these means, but heaven, which does not like to be used for egotistical ends, will demand an accounting one day, and they will be severely punished. »

« We often hear certain well-known people expressing indignation about the fact that even in these times human beings have not yet rid themselves of religious beliefs which are considered to be irrational. It is true that after a period of materialism, of scientism, more and more people are once again turning to religion, spirituality, or mysticism, and this tendency sometimes takes forms which are completely confused and nonsensical. Even religious authorities are disturbed by it, because they feel overtaken by these new currents which they cannot control.
Well, the responsibility for this situation lies with the faithful themselves, who have been more preoccupied with extending the domination of the Church than with responding to the real needs of souls and spirits.
It also lies with the scientists, whose materialistic philosophies leave people hungry and thirsty.

Both groups should therefore cease complaining about a situation that they themselves have helped to create. Instead, they should come together and see how they can change it. »

« Materialistic theories may seduce people for a time and sever their ties with the Divinity, but only temporarily.
Whether many celebrated thinkers like it or not, the Creator has designed human beings in such a way that they cannot manage without Him. If they imagine they can, it will only be for a brief moment. Right away they will sense that they have crippled themselves and will be obliged to return to another conception of the world and of themselves.

It is pointless, therefore, to waste time fulminating against those incorrigible human beings who need to believe in a Creator of the universe, in an invisible world peopled by spiritual entities, in life after death, and in the power of prayer, because they will remain incorrigible. Yes, because this is the reality of humankind and the universe, a reality no one can change. »

« "In the beginning... God created the heavens and the earth,..." The entire initiatic philosophy is contained in these first few words of the Book of Genesis. The heavens and the earth... The heavens represent the spirit and the earth represents matter. It is for good reason that Moses first mentioned the heavens and then the earth, because heaven must always come first. This is what human beings have not yet understood very well. They put the earth first. And some go even farther and behave as if only the earth had been created, and who knows by whom! By putting the earth first, human beings have introduced an imbalance in social life and this imbalance is also reflected in them. Be aware that all imbalance stems from not understanding the place the Creator has given to the spirit and matter respectively. Matter should not be neglected, of course not, but it is far more detrimental to humankind not to have understood once and for all that they must put the spirit first. »

"Remember to link consciously to the living chain of created beings, so as to benefit from the currents of energy circulating from the heights to the depths of creation. You will then receive the impetus, inspiration, wisdom, love and strength you need for everyday life. You will ask, ‘But can we not find them in ourselves?’ Yes, you can for some time perhaps, but your reserves will soon be exhausted. You might start off with great plans but soon have to curtail your work, because it is impossible to achieve anything great unless you remain part of this living chain, whose first link, so to speak, is the Lord himself. It is just as if a lamp thought it could give light without being connected to the power station. It can’t – the power station sends the current, and the lamp itself is only the conductor.

The fact is, whether we like it or not, we are connected, plugged in, to the divine Source, but this connection must be conscious for us to fully benefit from it for our own evolution and that of all the created beings in the universe."

Yes. I celebrate halloween also - not because I feel evil spirits need chasing, but in observation of the tradition.

One need not believe in the basis of something to celebrate it.

Well it does seem hypocritical...you proclaim your lack of belief in God, but celebrate a proclaimed religious holiday? Doesnt make sense, why celebrate it based on a Christian tradition you dont believe in?

Because
1)I love giving/receiving presents
2) I love spending time with my family
3) I love all the baked goods that happen and the general cheery feel
4) I don't need to believe in jesus christ to enjoy these things it so happens the EVERYONE IS LIKE THIS AT CHRISTMAS... RELIGIOUS OR NOT. for the most part in North America Anyway.

Face it christmas became so cool you lost it as a religious holiday. but thats okay it lost all original values LONG ago, so just rename it and celebrate the old values...?

Make no mistake, there is a religious war in the US. We are, and have been at war since the founding of this country. The men who wrote the constitution made it very clear that this country wasn't supposed to be a Christian nation. It took a matter of 10 years to undo the laws they put in place to protect us from nuts like these. You cannot be an atheist in these times without knowing that you are in a war. If you're a weak person you'll keep your opinion to yourself, and say we are as bad the exteemists, but we are worse. Much worse. Fight the war, don't be a singular voice. I won't stop until we can elect people who share our thoughts into office. And if you're a human you won't either. Weakness of atheism is pathetic.

It's true. I have no morals! And I do whatever I want. Are you jealous? There will be no backlash, no judgement, no eternal damnation. I don't live in your world of morals, they were invented by men, and only men. Much like all other laws and rules to life. They are a man made invention. You should be afraid of people like me, because I do not live in your world of control and repression. I am happy, free, and do good things for people which is more than I can say for most Christians, who simply wait for god to do something for them. Have all the love you want for false idols, and invisible men in the sky, and when you're 80 and look back regretting an entire life of following man made rules and laws, I will be very sad for you. The only hell is the one you've chosen to put yourself in. There is no eternal rules to life and it is very sad you cannot live the way you want. Meanwhile, be afraid of people like me. Very afraid.

Re: Serious question for atheists...please respond...
See this is a tricky one for me. I was raised as a christian and baptized when I was 11, but now, at 23, almost every aspect of my spirituality has undergone some sort of re-tool.
First of all, from what I can tell, I dont believe Jesus was ever actually flesh and walked the earth. Just another solar messiah, an astrological allegory representing the suns descent and rebirth during the winter solstice.
However, i think christians need not get distraught over this fact. It is his principles, his expressed morals, his methods of action, which should command your religion and your respect. His existence, his death, ressurection, all irrelevant if you just focus on the actual teachings that wound up in the Bible (everything carefully placed), many of which bear strong ties to the new age Ascension movement/scenario.
It seems devolved humans long for a god to worship, ignoring the divinity within themselves. Ancients took what they could- they observed and worshiped the patterns of nature. The catholic church simply distorted many of these celebrations to their own advantage- much like many texts which ended (or didnt end) up in the Bible we have today.
I believe in a Creator. And I believe in the power of love. Therefore I have no problem celebrating with my christian family the joys of giving, fellowship, and food! And if they want to do it on July 25 thats ok too.

Re: Serious question for atheists...please respond...
I've been confronted, harassed, and assaulted by Christians, catholics, evangelicals, and basically all relgious types, who can't discuss their father in a civil manner. They get angry, they get more angry and then they get violent. Some are just weak, and talk to themselves afterward like schizophrenics who can't face reality. You guys have a long history of fighting the truth, and denying the facts that your religions and I mean all of them are just plain stupid. So.. I fight back, I'm tired of having you people shove your belief systems down my throat and getting angry and physical when I disagree or speak my mind. The children who's parents believe this, are in fact raising their them to be soldiers of Christ, and no, that doesn't scare me, it makes me confident in the fact that we, as atheists need to also be educating our children about the dangers of tradition faith based ideal systems and the dangers of denying research and investigation of all ideas and opinions and not just the rejection of all ideas but just one, which happens to be the one their parents indoctrinatex them with when they were at an impressionable young age. Religion is dangerous, and not just for the obvious reasons.. it's dangerous for many reasons, and one being that it halts progressive ideas in our culture. They have a history of rejecting new scientific ideas that clash with their belief system. The fact that most world religions would look; oh I don't know an extra terrestrial life form in the face and swear that it is a lie presented by the devil. Or see dinosaur fossils at museum and exclaim that the devil is a tricky mother fucker! It's dangerous to our progress as a civilization, and species, and as just one of the many lifeforms that inhabit this universe. Try explaining your ideas of god as a man to a type 3 civilization as see how long it takes before you begin to feel like you are being crushed mentally and everything you know is crumbling around you. Try explaining it to an atheist, who finds the same idea so laughable that he's embarrassed to be part of the same human race as you. I think religiousness is a sickness, that's it a plague and the ratio of good to bad that these moral Highgrounders boast is actually not really in the favor of goodness, it's a history of slaughter, repression, oppressivness, backwards logic, and generalized psychotic behavior. There's nothing good that ever came from faith based religions. Absolutely nothing. Even the charity work that some claim for the church OS done in an attempt to get on god's good side, out of a conditioned fear of the devil in regards to death. It's a weakened mind state to be scared of places and people that have no form of proof of their existence whatsoever. There isn't a single shred of proof for any structure of any religion. And if you think that scripture is your proof, think again, the bible old testament and new, were both written by a group of women hating biggot, racists. Who had never met, conversed, or met anyone who had any contact with the subject the book is actually about. Jews haven't their ten commandments, muslims haven't a sane origin for their religion, that's a story for another time though, for that is a religion that was founded on the idea that if you think the guy is crazy who talked to god, he'll just murder you to prove he's right. And he did, and all religions are guilty of this murder to disbelievers. So when I say there is a war still happening believe it.. it hasn't stopped and may never stop, until we someday as a species put aside the traditions that don't make sense anymore and realize we are insignificant in the midst of a sprawling universe that is full of life and beauty. I really do wish that we could still feed Christians to lions again, it was a little payback for all the atrocities they have somehow forgotten. It is not okay now because time has passed. Catholics, stop sending your kids to the pedos, Christians stop promoting death in the disgues of humanitarianism, and Muslims, jews, nature witch freaks, I'll start on you in the next post.

Re: Serious question for atheists...please respond...
So you dont say "merry christmas" or anything... You say Happy Winter Solstice heres some presents? Why even give presents for winter solstice, whats the reason behind it?

Now there is a very lateral thought... Well done!

Do you buy Christmas presents for your loved ones? Take off from work on Christian holidays? Totally serious question...

No I don't buy presents. Yes I do take the day off because the company I work for is closed that day. It's one of our paid holidays.

You call it Christmas... We call it "winter solstice."

Winter solstice is the 21st of December. You have no clue what you ars talking about.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28013056

Speaking of having no clue what you're talking about, you might want to read up on why many civilizations opted for Dec 24th or even Dec 25th to celebrate the Winter Solstice. Then you'll understand the point people here are making about the distinct correlation between Christmas and the Winter Solstice.
