More Americans Will Use Food Stamps For Thanksgiving This Year Than Ever Before
More Americans will use food stamps to buy their Thanksgiving dinner this year than ever before, according to a new report from the nonprofit government watchdog group The Sunlight Foundation.

The Food Stamp Challenge, which challenges higher-income families to live as if they are on food stamps, estimates that a person on food stamps has a budget of about $1.25 per meal. In other words, a family on food stamps must buy an entire meal per person for less than the cost of an average cup of coffee.

This Thanksgiving, 42.2 million Americans will be on food stamps, according to the Economic Policy Institute. This is roughly the size of the populations of California and Connecticut combined.

Disregard the troll, Koffee.
As for the subject at hand, there is no way you can buy a decent Thanksgiving meal on food stamps, unless you don't want to eat the rest of the month. Many organizations are giving out Thanksgiving Baskets, but their criteria to receive them is really getting strict. For example, in my community, the local agency who gives out the majority of the Thanksgiving Baskets, informed all the people receiving them this year, that unless they sign up for Energy Assistance this year, they wil not be eligible for a Thanksgiving Basket next year. In my community, all the slots for an appointment for Energy Assistance were filled within a few days, no more appointments are being taken. If you didn't get a "ticket" for an appointment within 2 days of them taking appointments, you cannot get one.
I know of several people who's food stamps have been drastically cut, even though their income has not changed. It is going to get worse out there, as people will start to get more desperate.

Sigh. We have been eating at the mission (Salvation Army) and they are CLOSED the 22nd and 23rd.

No turkey for us. However, we will grab any thing they have out tomorrow (usually expired or expired that day bread) and then we at least have something.

I hope everyone has a great thanksgiving one way or another.

Saw that on Drudge this morning. Really sad. I'm so grateful that I still have a good job and I can't imagine how some people have entire families to care for. I'm on my own. And I can't see how this situation is going to get any better going at the rate we are.

In my community, having children is not the criteria for getting a Thanksgiving Basket. EVERYONE who is eligible by income gets one, up to the limit of baskets available. This one agency i mentioned, gave out 900 baskets.

OK, my wife is NOT allowed to work as she is Canadian. I left a retail management career to take care of my grandfather for one year and then he died. My job was gone by then, but then my mother needed help so I left to take care of her for FIVE years and she passed last year. I went homeless because of this and had to quit college (was a speech-language/audiology major but became literally homeless) and could not find work where I was living.

I am a veteran and do not take food stamps or generally ask for handouts and have for years donated time and monies to help many charities and plan to again when we can, but that does not mean we are a leach for wanting a meal on Thanksgiving.

I TRULY HOPE that what has happened to me (and wife) does not EVER happen to you or anyone you love because it feels like the universe is out to get you when no matter where you go and what you do...something goes wrong and rips it apart. If I told you all things that have happened in just one year, you probably wouldn't believe me, but it is amazing that I still have the need, want and desire to help others and find what USED to be my life. Sometimes, I figure I am just seeing things from the other side for a bit as I was VERY fortunate all my life when it came to career, money, education etc.

Perhaps you need to see if from another side before making "assumptions". Anyway, when I get my master's degree (yes, us old almost 40 year olds still try) in Social Work, I will still smile and help everyone I can (especially veterans) regardless of how you may think I am a leech. LOL...a leech.

Re: More Americans Will Use Food Stamps For Thanksgiving This Year Than Ever Before
After my parents divorce, my father remarried a woman who had 4 children.

Add that to the five of us we were one big family of ten!
We always had financial struggles, but all ten of us always had plenty at Thanksgiving.

My stepmother learned many ways of stretching food and making inexpensive, yet, nutritional meals.

We always had a 22-24 lb. Butterball turkey, cooked in a small apartment size electric oven.

All 4 of us girls would help my stepmom make the bread stuffing.

We did get free powdered milk, blocks of cheese and canned peanut butter from a food bank, but that's about it.

Our juice was always watered down and our milk was extended by using the powdered stuff.

She knew how to make 1001 recipes using hamburger.

Hot dogs and baloney sandwiches were eaten frequently.

I know food prices have risen and product packaging has shrunk, but I still think we can still eat healthy without having to spend too much.

The last five years of my husband's life were hard on us.
We did go on food stamps during that time. I hated it!

Mainly because there was too much paper work and follow-up that needed to be done every 3 months. They needed to know everything about you.

The first thing I did after my husband passed on, was stop the food stamps. I do not like to rely on the government for anything.

It has still been a struggle, but with God's help, I'm surviving.

Our government has become a givernment.
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task

 Quoting: tiger1

Wonder if it's more a matter of planning and cooking? When I was doing the food stamp thread, and then reading the "food stamp challenge" where people try to get by on that amount, I came up with a list based on the local grocery ads.

Not saying it wouldn't be hard, but good planning could stretch that money.

Turkeys are on sale now, some for .68 a lb. Another store has 11.00 off a 10 to 14 lb. turkey and 17.00 off a 15 lb. and up turkey. I got 3 turkeys for under 12.00 to put in the freezer for dog food meat.

Giving it the benefit, I counted 2 ten lb. turkeys on my list at the .68 a lb. price. One to be used for the meals, the other frozen.

The numbers on the left are the price. If I'm figuring right, the average person gets approx. 130. a month?
Correct me if I'm wrong.

My list takes less than half that and uses only one turkey. It would provide turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, cranberry sauce, salad, rolls, and a pumpkin pie....if you made it yourself.

The leftovers menu follows the price list.

This would easily cover half the month, and that's with one turkey.

Here's my grocery list and some ideas for leftovers.

14.00 2 turkeys
4.00 16 lb. potatoes
4.00 10 lb. flour
1.00 1 lb. noodles
1.00 1 lb. rice
10.00 10 1 lb. bags frozen vegetables
5.00 cooking oil
2.00 1 doz. eggs
2.00 1 gal. milk
4.00 yeast
1.00 head lettuce
2.00 English muffins
1.00 carrots
1.00 elbow macaroni
1 tortilla shells
1 can cranberry sauce
1 jar enchilada sauce
1 pumpkin
2 boxes cornmeal muffin mix

More could be saved by making your own tortilla shells, muffins and noodles.

Leftover ideas:

cold turkey
sandwiches

open face hot turkey sandwich

turkey pot pie

turkey noodle soup

turkey salad

turkey rice casserole

turkey and dressing with cranberry sauce on top

turkey gravy over mashed potatoes

turkey hash

turkey gravy with chives over a half English muffin

turkey mushroom omelet

turkey enchiladas

turkey fajitas

The turkey could be alternated with the following ideas to prevent turkey burnout.

fried potatoes/eggs

eggs/toast

pumpkin bars, bread, or pie

hash browns/eggs

fajitas

pancakes

Add a box of oatmeal or cream of wheat and you'd have some variety.

Add a bag of onions and you could have potatoes with onions or onions in the fajitas. You'd still be below half the allotted amount for the month and still have a turkey in the freezer.

Add a bag of onions and you could have potatoes with onions or onions in the fajitas. You'd still be below half the allotted amount for the month and still have a turkey in the freezer.

Re: More Americans Will Use Food Stamps For Thanksgiving This Year Than Ever Before
More Americans will use food stamps to buy their Thanksgiving dinner this year than ever before, according to a new report from the nonprofit government watchdog group The Sunlight Foundation.

I donate to the food banks in my neighborhood, and I encourage others to do so as well

Since the mid 2000s, many who used to donate to food banks are now their customers

Overwhelmingly, it is the middle class who donate to soup kitchens & food banks. Talk to any of the people running these, from Maine down to Texas, and they will almost all tell you that they are running far lower on supplies and donations than they did 10 years ago

This difficult economy is real, and almost no one willingly goes to a food bank if they can help it...there is a stigma associated.

Anyway, it takes very little, maybe $20 of canned goods or other groceries. If everyone gives a little, it goes a long way

Here's a list to get started:

Donating is my way of giving thanks for the good things in my life. In my area there are meetups who donate time to feed the homeless on major holidays as well:

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone

"Moral of the story is I chose a half measure when I should have gone all the way. I'll never make that mistake again.

Excellent and kindhearted advice!

Even if you share a dish with a struggling or elderly neighbor that lives alone--that helps and is greatly appreciated.

That's the nicest way anyone has ever asked me to shorten my post. Thank you. lol

Nice thread, Koffee. Maybe it will make people aware of people in their own communities that would appreciate what we can give. Doesn't need to be "charity". You can always have extra with no room to store it, or too much to use, or
"forget" you already had one in the freezer.
