We are not in the centre To answer your question: the only way to take a photo of the galaxy where you can see it from above the elliptic plane, would be to launch a camera into interstellar space above the galaxy. Given our current tech, I estimate that such a satellite would arrive at the desired position in a few million years, so don't get your hopes up of seeing such photo in our lifetime. |

And we can see through the gaps to see the centre. To take a photo like that. Go to a place with low light pollution, away from cities, and preferably higher up. Then point your cam tithe sky and take a long exposure photo. |

It's a huge disk of star and we are near the outer edge, so we can look inward to the centre and see most of the galaxy (some is obscured by interstellar dust). |

Your only error was in assuming that we are at the centre of the galaxy, when in fact we are near its outer edge, so we can in fact see most of its shape from where we are. |
