The First Amendment applies primarily to the government not being able to pass laws restricting freedom of speech.

The above quote that "Free speech doesn't mean free of consequences..." is CORRECT. She is free to say and express whatever she wants. And everyone else is free to voice their opinion of it and decide not to associate with her or employ her.

The government does NOT have to defend her from the consequences her speech brings from others. The others have just as much right to employ THEIR freedom of speech and freedom of association.

If her employer feels that her speech/actions were detrimental to the organization, yes, they CAN fire her. ESPECIALLY since Lindsey Stone was effectively ON THE CLOCK when she did it, not on her own time. That trip was part of her job, paid for by the organization, and she was there with 40 of the organization's clients and her coworkers.
