EDIT:--THE PURPOSE OF THIS POST IS TO RAISE AWARENESS THAT PEOPLE NEED TO PREPARE FOR THEIR PETS AS WELL, NOT JUST THEMSELVES. THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME CONFUSION HERE. I HAVE INDEED PREPARED FOR MY PETS, SO CHILL WITH THE HATEFULNESS.

just as much a part of the family AS CHILDREN??

granted, people love their pets, but if you had to choose, you would save your kids

i love my cats to bits but i dont regard them as 'just as important' as my kids

truth is, if people are pressed for time and the situation is dire enough, they will leave their pets, and save their children

Of course if we had to leave on foot I don't know what we would do. In that case a dog would be much easier to care for............but a cat? I just know that I would try........maybe I can put them in a baby carrier on my chest?

Re: What do we do with our pets if disaster strikes and chaos ensues? DON"T FORGET TO PREP FOR THEM TOO!
I've written many posts about this topic, because many people have pets and some are preppers.

Obviously if you do care about your animal and you also want to be frugal, then you purchase their food when it's on sale and rotate it so they have plenty but save yourself money. Hey, that's real prepping not buying bugout bags...hmmm

Let's say you have a dog or cat. What do they eat in Nature? They're mammals that are predators and eat meat. In a collapse, you could easily harvest by trapping small rodents and supplement their diet from your pet food supplies. Trapping is the way our ancestors most often ate meat, not hunting which is way more demanding of calories used to produce work.

Many diseases are spread by pets from their fecal matter. For example, in a collapse, local water supplies could be compromised and people and pets would drink from contaminated streams or lakes. Pets could get amebic dyssentary or they could get toxoplasmosis gondii or they could get about six different varieties of worms. This means know how it's spread, making sure your pet drinks clean water, knowing how to find water and dig wells, not allowing their fecal matter to be composted and recycled in your garden, etc.

In a collapse, you might become their veterinarian. It's that or if they get sick, they'll potentially die. If you care about them, they maybe you download the veterinarian manuals about their specific needs and learn how you might best limit their exposure to common ailments and how you might treat them. You probably won't have medicines. How did our ancestors treat them? Learn by reading history.

It's that or putting them down when they get sick and potentially infectious and making other community animals sick. Do you really want to do that? Do you have the capability and know-how to do it so they don't suffer? If not, then it will be cruel when you have to do it, and make mistakes and they suffer worse because of your ineptness.

It's been hypothesized that many people will abandon their pets in a disaster based upon previous history with say Hurricanes or wartime. When that happens, animals go feral. Dogs will run in packs and share their diseases. Because a dog is a social creature that likes to be around humanity, but may have lost its normal fear and docility from taking care of itself, a feral dog has a high chance of attacking a weaker human in order to survive.

People worry a lot about wolf attacks, but there's little documentation about them. It's far more likely for a dog to attack, and especially when it has gone feral. Some species of dog will interbreed with coyotes or wolves too, and then become a very dangeous species to deal with.

These are the basic kinds of issues with dogs and cats in a collapse.

If you haven't thought about it already then your a moron. Your asking us...? The question is WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT...?

If you don't have access to a vet or Gun then you better think really hard about it now. You just can't let you dog go or any animal go and hope your the best. Doing that will just ensure some very cruel death at the hands of another Human or another animal which in my opion are the same.

Yes you could eat them if it came to that but if you plan on bringing them along for the ride you better have stocked up for them also otherwise put them down the right way before shit happens.

They is going to be alot of tragedy coming up in many ways when shit happens.

For me I'm on a big peice of land in the middle of now where. My dogs hang with me and I have lots of supplies for them ALREADY. RIGHT NOW. If one can stay in place then your ideas are great. But lets be honest here. Most people about 90% of them will abondon their pets. Dog will pack up and yes they will kill eveything including humans. They will kill all the little dogs first. Little dogs are history. Bigger dogs like shepherds with good insulated coats would be in for the long run.

Wolves to not mate with dogs or coyotes. They would kill any that they met along the way. Please give me a break on that one.

Domestic dogs males would mate with female coyotes if they let them. Thats rare. Most coyotes are smaller and would have a similar fate as small dogs.

As far as trapping game for your dogs. Hope you live in the country and you will probably be eating what you catch yourself and maybe you would share.

To the girl who's going to pack her cats and a litter box around. Good fucking god. Are you kidding me...? Better think again you fool. Not going to work out well for them. Get over it and do the right thing for your animals guys and you better have a way of putting them down a well though out one otherwise your an idiot.

This ^^^ You bring them with you if you have to bug out. Feed them as best you can if you bug in. But they are animals, they can find their own food source if they are hungry enough. And if they're smart enough and loyal they will follow you, no leash required. If they get lost, they're on their own. As another poster stated, they are good for rodent control and protection/early warning.

Take 'em with you if you can, otherwise set them free. Cats are resourceful and dog's are known to pack up with other stragglers.

Actually in a collapse scenario, a lot of survivalists mention guarding against roving packs since they can easily take down small or weak humans. Most dogs are just a couple of steps removed from wolves and about the size of coyotes.

Alas, survival of the fittest may mean leaving them to survive yourself.

I have extra food for mine. I will take my dogs with me, but will leave the cat with all of his food in the garage (kitty door access). He knows this neighborhood and does not travel well. My large dog is an Aussie and is quiet as a mouse and obeys almost telepathically especially off-leash (for herding reasons-does not spook the herd). My small one is a yapper and may be a great alarm, but may also be a giveaway when we need to remain quiet. She is almost impossible to shut up. The last thing we need is to have looters passing by and be alerted to our presence b/c of a guard dog.

Remember, it is important to survive longterm. Rambo will not, at least not for long. Ninja style is the only way.

Peace!

your pets will find a way to survive, somehow. they're animals. cold and wet? means fuck all to them. it's a death sentence for most of us though.

they need far less calories than us as well, and are FAR less fussy eaters than we are.

Yes; perhaps a soft sided carrying case that could be worn as a back pack or across your chest? A collapsible cage (saves space) in your vehicle would come in handy too.

I would never leave my pets either and have made provisions to take them with me. Also, in case of a fairly localized emergency, have arrangements with someone else to care for them if possible.
