Start early, start now. Simply announce that you will not be giving or accepting anything for Christmas. Period. If there is any awkwardness with anyone, the awkwardness is about them, not about you. There is nothing more liberating in our typical American life than to FREE yourself from this insanity. Do it calmly, and compassionately. Explain it however you like -- maybe your have just plain lost enthusiasm for the materialism of the season and want to get back to a sense of humility and gratitude for the simpler things. Or just announce that you can't reasonably afford it and are opting out of gift exchanges. Whatever you do, state it honestly and plainly. Liberate yourself from the madness! You'll be leading others by example. I Support Our First Responders |

I get excited wondering what my husband and mom will get me, but other than that I never think about what Im getting. Its just wonderful giving things to other people to make them happy. I can see the commercial attitude that people find ugly, but underneath that is the spirit of the season, which is helpful and selfless. Giving to others is not bad, but going into debt to buy things is. Buy what you can afford for people and remain debt and guilt free. |
