The White House said Obama talked to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday and commended him for agreeing to the Egyptian cease-fire proposal, which Obama had recommended the prime minister accept.

The deal would end a week of fighting that has killed more than 140 Palestinians and five Israelis.

Obama told Netanyahu that the United States will use the opportunity offered by a cease-fire to intensify efforts to help Israel address its security needs, especially the smuggling of weapons and explosives into Gaza, the White House said in a statement.

Obama also spoke to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi and thanked him for his efforts to achieve the agreement, as well as his personal leadership in negotiating the proposal.

Obama and Morsi agreed on the importance of working toward a more durable solution in Gaza, the White House said.

The cease-fire agreement capped days of intense efforts that drew the world's top diplomats into the fray. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton stood next to Egypt's foreign minister, Mohammed Kamel Amr, as he announced the breakthrough at a news conference in Cairo.

The agreement will "improve conditions for the people of Gaza and provide security for the people of Israel," Clinton said.

Why are you people so easily bought over?

A cease fire to a problem Israel started? Common! This is all drama set up to make it look like they are doing something....like they tried....to make things more dramatic. I suggest you stop paying attention and empowering this charade.

According to their plans, all roads lead to WW3 and the more dramatic it is, the more believable it appears to the religious zealots who have absolutely no clue that Israel is the one pulling these strings and causing these problems.

I also presume that people who have no electricity can communicate to their factions to stop the a bombing wherever they are positioned all over Gaza, assuming the stories we hear are even true? Common guys!

What a mistake! Obviously, Hamas was losing big time, and this cease fire lets them keep their rockets, regroup. I feel badly for those who had to put up with it all, but I think this should have kept up for a few more weeks so Israel could get some real breathing space, hopefully a few years worth, or even better than that permanently. Obama, either intentionally or inadvertently, did the wrong thing this time. I know many up here won't like this, but I think it was obvious that anyone who first rockets over many years without regard to where they land, be it playgrounds or open fields, houses or schools, etc. needed to be stopped from doing that once and for all.

So you're saying Israel bombing densely populated Gaza and killing women and children indiscriminately is not deserving of punishment or at least criticism? People always complain of Hamas doing that in residential areas....ummm...where are they supposed to do it from, there's no other space.

Anyways, Hamas is not the ones starting the aggressions most of the time. The story has 2 sides. The de-escalation was the smart thing for now unless you want total and all out war. Any effort should be made to avoid this.

Following is the verbatim English text of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza that was reached on Wednesday through Egyptian mediation. The text was distributed by the office of the Egyptian president.

Agreement of Understanding For a Ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

1.

A. Israel should stop all hostilities in the Gaza Strip land, sea and air including incursions and targeting of
individuals.

B. All Palestinian factions shall stop all hostilities from the Gaza Strip against Israel including rocket attacks and all attacks along the border.

C. Opening the crossings and facilitating the movements of people and transfer of goods and refraining from restricting residents' free movements and targeting residents in border areas and procedures of implementation shall be dealt with after 24 hours from the start of the ceasefire.

D. Other matters as may be requested shall be addressed.

2. Implementation mechanisms:

A. Setting up the zero hour for the ceasefire understanding
to enter into effect.

B. Egypt shall receive assurances from each party that the party commits to what was agreed upon.

C. Each party shall commit itself not to perform any acts that would breach this understanding. In case of any observations Egypt as the sponsor of this understanding shall be informed to follow up.

DO NOT BE TO SURE ,THIS I THINK IS ONLY TO LET THE ISRAEL ELECTIONS PASS SO I WOULD WAIT TO SEE BEFORE MAKING AN ASS OF MYSELF.

There was talk from the Knesset if the Gaza situation continues the elections may be postponed. I think now they are going ahead as planned, as long as things stay quiet. Lets see, I agree, lets not speak too soon.

This is done for Israel and America to prepare of WW3 in December.
