Were All Going To Starve To Death...!
I've been looking at the Boards and nothing no information has been posted about how things shook out over the drought and crops. Same with the Worlds situation in regards to drought and flooding. I must say the flooding has been extensive in areas all over the place but nothing in the news or even alternative sites.

What is our current food resource situation right now. What do we have in the way of Grain Reserves and Corn. I know the Cattle guys have been forced to feed candies and sell their herds but what about the FOOD GRADE RESERVES...?

How many people are actually dieing right now from Starvation...? Useless eaters or not.

Its been too quiet lately in regards to World Wide Food Security. I wonder how bad it really is...?

We can live on love.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

I just bought 100 lbs of potatoes. They were on sale, $1 per 10 lb bag.

I'm not going to starve any time soon. thumbs

Edit: to add 10 lb bag for $1.

I reported on it during the harvest of soybeans and corn. Since those times have passed in the USA, most people have lost interest in it. They don't realize the drought is on-going.

It will have severe effects not only on that harvest and food prices, but other more far reaching concerns. The amount of moisture loss means a loss of nitrogen fixing bacteria in the soil. This makes a higher need for fertillizer.

Animals need water in Winter. Even though many are domant, they still drink water and have access from their dens to get water. With the drought, many species will die in greater amounts than the usual culling of animals each year. Some will say, "So what?". The issue is you might be trapping for animals in a collapse, and this means less animals than normal are available or producing young in the Spring.

Many plants are dying based upon the depth of their root systems. Trees and many shrubs pull up water from ground water and deeper levels, and hence create micro-climates for other shallow root system plants to survive. We might see a lot of species die and it takes a long time to reestablish them. These are not only food sources for insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, they're food sources for us too. Many valuable tree crops from nuts or berries or fruit could be lost.

Water loss leads to two things: more competition for available water resources that need to be piped to arid places, plus less river traffic for barges.

Very dry Western states may see all kinds of new stricter water controls and higher prices.

A river barge transfers up to forty truckloads of material. It saves fuel prices. It transfers to hubs to more efficently support the supply chain. It saves roads from additional repair.

Since the Oil Crisis of the 70's, more investment went into ethanol production from corn. Since there's less field corn produced (the drier kind for cornmeal and animal feed), and the demand is the same, then the prices rise. Less ethanol can be produced. Gas prices rise with more demand from trucking to move the same materials. It's all bad news.

Drought conditions create Coccidioidomycosis, an infection that's spread by the aerial disbursal of windbourne soil particles. We could see epidemics of this in these new arid regions similar to the Dust Bowl. Then was called valley fever or dust pneumonia.

Re: Were All Going To Starve To Death...!
I agree wholeheartedly with the excellent post above, which described some of the effects of extreme, prolonged moisture loss.

If you want to know what's happening, you can try Googling, but I like AgWeb myself.

There are other side effects which will show themselves next year, mostly in meats. A great many breeding animals were sent to slaughter (hence the slight drop, or flatness in price for those, despite the increasing costs of fuel and feed) because there was no feed, or farmers and lots could not afford the forages/grains that were found a very long distance away.

In cattle alone, there is going to be about a three year lull, as the industry recovers from the sell off. It takes time to raise up those heifers/cows, breed them, and then calve and get the resulting offspring processed. Enjoy your beef while you can afford it.

I have stocked in about two years' worth of poultry feed, trying to make it until after the next harvest or longer. Since I started doing this, the price of *every* type of feed is up over 25% in my area, with WalMart employees telling people prices will be up by 140% in the spring........

Re: Were All Going To Starve To Death...!
We had the "election" and now we have the "Gaza" thing and people are easily distracted. Let's see how distracted they are in February and March when certain things will either just not be available or will cost twice as much as it did.

The problem with beef...and they warned us months ago...farmers were bringing their herds to slaughter because they couldn't afford to feed them or water them. This caused a surge of available meat at the stores and markets so prices have stayed pretty much flat. It is not going to be that way in deep winter and into the spring. Expect chicken and pork to rise as well.

Better stock up dried soup beans! Least you'll get some protein to go with your rice and potatoes. BTW...peanut butter is also expected to have a jump n prices. Friend of mine works at a big super market grocer and his boss told him to buy in lots of peanut butter now cause the prices were going to go up.

The drought didn't go away...it's just most of us have ADD and can't pay attention on a subject more than a couple of minutes if it is not thrust in our face constantly. The effects haven't even really started yet...but I bet people are going to see prices going up from now through Christmas and then get really bad when the warehouses start thinning down.

A dollar a pound! you can almost always get a 10# bag of potatoes here in the pacific northwest for couple of bucks, seriously.

Usual sale price for 5# is like 1.39.

Where did you pay a dollar a pound for 100 pounds of potatoes on sale? Surely they were organically grown at that price?

I dont know what to believe.A few months back pecans were very expensive supposedly because the crops wasnt good.Last night a news show said there was a much better crop than expected..Peanut butter was suppose to go up and has somewhat but they have record crops in Georgia this year.
Clothing prices were suppose to increase yet they have a banner cotton year too.

So we are left to wonder if the shortages are as bad as they said earlier and if they are why no news and drastic price increases yet.Sometimes I find myself wondering if everything is being covered up until the holiday sales are over and then we will get slammed with price increases going into 2013.

I have noticed that for instance. Cereal. The price is the same but whats in the box is way less. Look and see. Up to 70-80- grams less in the box. I have noticed this with lots of stuff. Samr price but less in the box or carton or the packages themselves are smaller and hold less like cookies. 12 less cookies in my favorite brand smaller package same price.

BINGO! We have a winner!

They are holding off the "bad news" till everyone has spent their money for Thanksgiving and Christmas. All the merchants have to get your money before you suddenly have to struggle to keep food on the table, heat and electricity.

Just wait. The food reserves were stable but people tend to "indulge" more during Thanksgiving and the time leading to Christmas. Those warehouses are going to start thinning out.
