Well I wasn't able to load the picture you posted at the moment, but in general I find the best way to remove viruses is to bypass booting the installed operating system altogether. I would burn this to a DVD (or make a live USB stick with it) and use it:

The screenshot seems to indicate that you can't boot from any device.

AFAIK, this means that whoever owns the 'puter will need to get a replacement BIOS chip from the motherboard manufacturer.

You need to be able to boot at least from the CD drive to have any hope of recovery.

Your hard disk isnt registering, it may have failed. Go into your bios and load defaults. Your trying to boot from a network device it looks like also, prolly because your HD isnt showing up

I'm assuming the operating system is installed on HDD0? HDD1 and HDD2 are currently excluded from the boot order. Looks to me like it might be a hard drive problem since it says it can't find the device for HDD0. Someone else suggested a bios problem which I suppose might also be the case. You could try creating a rescue disc like the article described and then see if the rescue disc can see the hard drive, I'm guessing it won't. It may just be a hard drive failure.

Re: How to Get Rid of a Virus (Even When Your Computer Won’t Boot) Question
if that laptop normally boots from HDD0, you either have a screwed bios (very unlikely), screwed controller firmware (unlikely), an electronic failure (likely that that harddrive or the controller is fucked), or a flawed or dislodged connector (easy to check with a laptop, screw open the right lid on the underside).

try booting some rescue cd or dvd, and see if you can access that harddrive (unlikely, since it isn't recognized).

the article has nothing to do with your photo.

Should have seen the pic before i commented.

Looks like your drive has failed, drives made in china do this lot.

Enter the bios and reload the defaults first the boot off a operating system cd or dvd.. You may need to buy a new hd

if your BIOS is buggered you will not POST, power on self test. the screen would remain blank. your HD is pooched, open up the case, wiggle some wires around with the power off of course. clean out the dust. Power on the unti, listen to the hard disk, make sure it spins up. listen for unusual clicking, or any other funny noise. Check the POST again for detection of the device. once it shows up your on the right track.

Then make sure its first in the boot order and you load your operating system...

Re: How to Get Rid of a Virus (Even When Your Computer Won’t Boot) Question
booting from lan is disabled in the bios. there is no hard drive being id'd (which could just mean the HDD failed, it happens)the optical disc drive is being recognized, but doesnt have a bootable OS disc in it. there is no USB optical disc drive hooked up. just looks like a hard drive failure (which could also be a connector failure, btw). did you pal drop it lately? nothing in the pic posted screams out "virus", just "hardware fuckup". i'd pull the trapdoor for the HDD and make sure it's firmly inserted as the initial attempt at resurrection. if it still wont recognize the HDD, well, time to say bon voyage to the porn and junk on the old one, and hit comp usa for a new one.

Looks like it sees the DVD drive....but there is no bootable OS on the DVD.

...boot the OEM WinXP / Win7 disk in the PC and see if you can see and/or repair the hard drive.
Listen for clicking noises from your hard drive.
If you hear that....it's usually the sound of the hard drive Grim Reaper.

You could try flashing the BIOS and updating it too.
Just be careful with that when/if you do it....you can brick your entire motherboard permanently if you interrupt the update.

Just download a free linux on a CD and boot from that. If you can boot it and it loads the linux OS you know your bios is ok. If it loads but can't see the hard drive you know the drive is fried.

From these disks you can also repair and remove viruses.

Like others already mentioned, it looks like a messed up hard drive.

Even if your drive is filled with viruses or malware your bios should detect the drive.

Do you hear clicking or grinding noise? (possible sounds from a bad drive)

The bios will need to be flashed most likely. The HD firmware will also need flashed. Then it will all be like new.

She can flash the bios but to flash the HD it takes a special workbench setup. This is what repair shops are setup to do.

If it beeps once go to next post. if you hear a few beeps try this
You need to look up her laptops model on their wesite, download a copy of their user manual and find beep codes and find out what that tells you. It will tell you what to try. You can google it too, like acer aspire 1500 beep codes

You can also try reseating the hard drive. It involves tacking the hd cover off and there is usually a screw holding the drive in place. Remove screw and unplug drive. Give it a shake to listen for anything unusual. Reinsert and try booting again

It might be a problem with the MBR master boot record.
Antivir bootable from USB might be handy, like kasprsky or bitdefender.
Also you can use a bootable linux from a pendrive to copy the files from hard drive and then format hdd and set up a new system

Re: How to Get Rid of a Virus (Even When Your Computer Won’t Boot) Question
It is clear, the laptop is NOT recognizing the hard dizk. until thats solved your stuck in a rut. The hard disk is either dead or the controller on the mother board that reads the drive is dead. Mostlikely the hard disk. You need to discover if its spinning up or if it clicks or if it just gets hot(the chip board on the hard drive feel the micro chips they may be too hot to touch). If the drive doesnt make any noise or gets hot, You can try sticking the hard disk in a known working laptop (most new laptops have slots for 2 hard disks) see if it will spin up in the known working laptop. If it spins up and is recognised in the working laptop, the controller is dead on the broken laptop. If it doens't spin up give her the bad news that all data is lost on the drive, buy a new one hard drive get a windows installer cd and your laptop will be just fine with a new hard drive and new install on it...

Unscrew the hard drive and take it to a specialist as they might be able to recover the data onto another drive but you need a techspert to achieve this. Disconnecting the physical drive also allows you to see the make and model in case you need to replace it
