I use bird shot. There is no need for buckshot or slugs inside a home especially if you have kids in the other room. Over penetration is a concern. Birdshot at 20 feet or less is going to kill you just as much and you don't have the worry about none target pest getting hit in the other rooms.

Personaly I use bird shot, 4 or 6 shot high brass. For interior u wouldn't want to use slugs or buckshot, you don't want to penetrate through walls and maybe hurt a family member. Take your shot gun out and experiment with different loads. See what kind of patterns you get with different loads. For outdoor use buckshot 9 or 12 pellet works great for distances of 15 to 20 yards. For longer distances slugs are the ticket. Practice with slugs and shots up to 100 yard are realistic. I am capable of hitting a 12 inch plate at 100 yards all day with my 590. Practice, practice, practice.
