This is a very reasonable question. If the calendar is out because of an error then we aren't in 2012 yet.

This is quite intentional. By and large, churches feed off of lost and broken people. Oftentimes, this does lead to good. For example, churches are some of the largest sources of charity in the world (I'm sure there are people that will debate that claim just as I'm sure there is a lot of truth to the arguments against it). That's a small aside leading to a greater point. The Church, throughout the past few millenia (if not since the inception of religion itself), feeds its adherents whatever they have to in order to keep them in line and remaining productive members of society.

Now, I'm going to make a bit of a jump. One of the most effective forms of keeping people in line is through the shock and awe method of control. Early on, the church scared people into a state of shock with stories/threats of Hell. This put people into a state of dysphoria. In that state, people will grasp onto and do whatever they need to do to be free of that state. Conveniently, the Church provided a nice escape: Heaven, for a small nominal fee, or tithe. They created a mental disease and sold the cure to bolster their ranks. This is quite similar to the practice of modern day churches using the Apocalypse as a literal end of the world theory. Scare 'em, give 'em hope and you've got a loyal soldier.
