Here in Washington State, you cannot get foodstamps unless you are working or in a work readiness program. If you only made 7000 this year and didn't qualify, maybe you should look into it more, you should qualify. Do you pay rent? They definitely factor the rent cost in. I encourage you to try again. I read that 33% of all full time workers are under the poverty line right now. I work two part time jobs and doubt I will clear ten grand this year. The work is so physical I can't take on a third gig, it would push me over the edge. If I get sick there are no paid sick days or anything like that. I am completely dependent on my good health to survive. |

Not at all. Most of us have gone to ground while keeping the skills alive. Buffed & toned arms come from kneading bread dough by hand, wielding a rolling pin & wooden spoons, hefting ceramic bowls & cast iron skillets, and bucking "economy size" larder staples. This Spring, when blueberries & strawberries were on sale, I bought quite a bit. Some we ate fresh; the rest dehydrated in a very slow oven. No need for extra kitchen gadgets. Right now there's a $2.99 turkey tenderloin defrosting for Thanksgiving dinner. It was at its pull date & marked down from $9.99. The $.59 bag of fresh whole cranberries will be made into cranberry relish, cranberry muffins, and a topping for bread pudding. There's also a skillet of slumgullion bubbling in the kitchen! What is slumgullion? A 1-# packet of ground beef, a tin of tomato paste, a chopt onion, and spices. That will be lunch if anyone is hungry today, and lunch for several days after. Also going to learn how to make tortillas this weekend. The bag of corn flour was on sale for $.99 so why not! And, the recipe is on the bag ;-) Apocalypse: All shall be revealed. And all shall be revealed. ******* All Human Beings are Human. Not all Humans are Human Beings. ******* |

Got down to 158 the other day at age 62. That's the lightest I've been in a decade. Frequently I go to bed hungry but that's what u have to do to lose weight. Besides, where this country is headed, we'll all be down to one or two meals a day. |

There should not be hunger anywhere as there is enough land and food for everyone. But it's still happening. Back in the late 70's/early 80's when the interest rates when sky high I did not have much money for food and I had 2 kids. I learned to make food from scratch, that was the only way I could get by. I can make meals from the basics. Beans, sugar, flour, shortening ect. If you can make food from scratch you probably will not starve. |

Frozen veggies are good and always cheaper. Load up on the beans in the chili, you can even put them over rice and potatoes to beef it up. Soups are great. French onion is easy and extremely filling. Oh and for the poster with ramen noodles. When I was small my mom would add frozen mixed veggies and whatever if any left over chicken she had. Makes it slightly healthier and more filling the whole meal even now would be just a few bucks. If you can help it buy darker meats (poultry) and you can drain and skim most of the fat on the cheaper ground beefs. But don't skimp on your oils (olive) and butter. The fats are better/help you absorb more. |

Quoting: Hellcat Maggie But, hey..I lost weight! :) We seriously are struggling, but I manage to make meals pretty cheaply. Yesterday, I made a HUGE pot of homemade chicken and dumplings for around ten dollars. The chicken was 7 dollars, and I used a stick of butter, milk and flour (of course, my secret blend of herbs and spices) for the dumplings..it was delicious and lasted two days. I know its very hard, these days, but we all have to learn to go back to home cooked meals. No fast food or take away meals. We have to learn to live like our grandparents did. I've done this too..except I couldnt even afford the chicken..we were down to 20 dollars on food every two weeks. I couldnt qualify for food stamps as I worked and we made too much money. it was very very hard..I lost weight and most the time didnt eat just so the little that we had would feed my two kids. The kids did qualify for free lunch during school so that was nice as I'm sure there were times that the free lunch was the best meal and/or only meal of the day for them. |

You were taught manners, hard work, etc. If I ever tried to back talk an adult I would be minus teeth and as mentioned if I didn't like dinner oh well, go hungry. I hardly ever see kids playing outside anymore and more often then not when I see kids interacting with adults they say whatever they want and god forbid you spank your kid, they already know they can get you in trouble. People's circumstances can change in an instant and the first priority is to take care of your kids and make sure their needs are met. I could go on and on but I wont LOL. I totally understand the anger towards people that are on the dole and don't do anything to help themselves however they are those that are really in need. Just wanted to add. We were very poor growing up and often had nothing to eat. We didn't have free lunches and there were times I would sneak and look in the garbage in the school lunchroom for something to eat. No weight loss tho. Actually gained from using rice and pasta to fill up on one meal a day. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18835047 My luck, friggin starving and still gain weight. It's not what you eat. It's how much you eat. Unless you have some underlying health issue, there is no reason to gain weight if you eat a healthy portion of food! There's no need to fill up like you said. That is the reason why there is so much obesity in this world. People use food like a drug. Looking for that ultimate 'high' feeling. In your case, being 'filled up'. Food is necessary to maintain health. Not for your emotional satisfaction. Eat to live. Not live to eat! |

How about after having the kids? Medical bills, loss of jobs, etc- think these things happen to people at the perfect moment? Idiot. those excuses can be valid, but are thrown around like every poor family just fell on hard times AFTER having their children because of these rough economic times. in the reality i see in federal way just south of seattle is a bunch of fat greasy lazy ass welfare fucks of black, white, and latin descent continually pumpin babies out with different fathers. they complain about the government not supplying them with enough cash for their children then light up a smoke and head out to get their nails or hair done, stop by the store to pick up more smokes, junk food for the kids and some liquor for their man (if they can find him). soooooo stop throwin around that crap like it's a legitimate excuse for the masses. most around here were livin this way loooooong before the economic crash and will continue to live this way well into the best of economic times. most of us know that SOME have fallen on hard times through little to no fault of their own, but a majority are just a bunch of worthless lazy fucks spongin up our tax dollars that could actually go to some needy family that deserves it. if was legal, i'd spend my holiday season goin around and punchin them all in the face then let the dog gnaw an ankle and drag em around a little. they just don't realize how thankful they really should be that by law i'm not supposed to do that. :ankle_bite: |

People DO try to maintain a semblance of holiday despite this crisis so if they are traveling or shopping, I bet it's due to some great sacrifice (like immense budgeting all year) I live 70 miles out in the country so my information(?) is coming from CNN and MSNBC. They show chaos at the airports because of 44,000,000 people going somewhere for Thanksgiving. We had to go to a funeral in Trinidad, Colorado on I-25. Bumper to Bumper in every city, especially Denver. It was so bad in Denver we had to use side streets which were still busy but at least moving. And the hotel in Trinidad was packed solid. I go to the grocery stores in town twice a month. There is always at least 3 to 4 people in every checkout line. You can't even park at the malls without having to walk a mile to get to the store. I had a question at the local Apple store and had to wait about 30 minutes before a clerk was free and there were about 20 clerks. Yes, there are a FEW who do not have money but they are rare and far between. Look at the unemployment. It is going down rapidly so people are working. Illegals are streaming here because the conditions here are so much better than anywhere else. So don't give me this bullshit about millions of children going hungry and millions of parents goin hungry. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26143620 I am amazed at how, when push comes to shove, learning to eat cheap is not as difficult as many think. Making meals that will stretch as warm ups, like chicken and dumplings as one poster spoke about, is really key to keeping the food budget down. My husband or I used to go to the grocery store almost daily, for things we misse during shopping or to satisfy a whim. That is a thing of the past, be we are surviving. Many of us were very spoiled and could eat in any manner we wanted. Now, we had to learn how to eat right, but cheap. For some it is really a shock and for other, like me, I realized how much we wasted and learned how to conserve. There are times when I eat something like cereal while my child has the last of the leftovers from last nights dinner, but I'm surviving just fine. Here are some of my tips: Many casseroles can be made meatless an are still nutritional. Whole wheat pasta is not that much more expensive than white bleached pasta. Soups in a bag are both nutritious and very inexpensive - add some potato rolls or the pillsbury type that you bake and it's a warm and feel good dinner. Ramen noodles are fine for kids for a snack, but they are not good substitutes for a meal...their nutritional value is in the pits. I don't take handouts from the government - period. I don't begrudge those who do, it is just my preference for myself. I won't fall into that trap and will continue to do for myself, through the survival skills I have learned over time. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving GLPers. Ramen soup can be made nutritious by taking an egg and mixing it into the boiling soup. The Chinese do this with their soups and it doesn't change the taste. |
