Especially once we become Adults and accept responsibilities both for ourselves and any children. "Stuff" is the first thing to be "sacrificed" when money gets tight in our family. So maybe we don't have a television, cel-ffons, designer label clothes & shoes, latest generation computers, latest model vehicles, etc. Maybe we don't take cruises, trips, vacations to exotic places and instead go to local events & state parks. Saving up instead for a long-distance Holiday visit with family... What we do have is paid monthly mortgage, utilities, insurances, and homemade food on the table. The working poor have it the hardest now, no where to move up . Sometimes many would do better to just move down and have more entitlements. So many companies cutting even part time employees hours that it hardly pays the gas to work. I really do not know how some people are making it. |

How about after having the kids? Medical bills, loss of jobs, etc- think these things happen to people at the perfect moment? Idiot. Does the world need more children? Of course not. But these selfish people can't control their hormones, and don't consider the consequences of their actions. Typical sheeple human behavior. Not having children would have made there lives much easier, regardless of a downturn in the economy, and eased the burden on planet earth. So who is the idiot? But, you probably won't know who they are because they don't likely go around bragging about it. I've done this for the past year - rationing food for myself so the kids could have a larger share. Learned you can survive on one meal a day, less if money is really tight. I never got food stamps. Perhaps it's selfish, but I just could not bring myself to face the shame of going to the welfare office. BUT, about a month ago, I landed a second job, and thankfully, oh-so-thankfully, we can afford to eat when we want to again! I may change adults' poopy diapers for a living, but it provides a paycheck that allows us to eat. We're still below the poverty level, but things are much better than they were. So this is an extra special Thanksgiving for us - the first one in a couple of years where we could actually afford Thanksgiving groceries! |

In some cases, mothers are putting their health at risk by eating only every other day to make sure their children do not go hungry. Some nine per cent of people have sometimes skipped meals, gone without to feed their children or relied on friends, family or charity for food in the past 12 months, according to a study backed by Tesco. Source: [link to newsdoors.blogspot.com] Not to downplay this American shame, which is what it is, but there are ways to eat much cheaper than most Americans are accustomed to, and to improve health while doing so. It requires giving up most or all meat and processed foods, however. I once had a friend who grew up in a deeply poor Hispanic family, and she told me once, "We never had any money but we never went hungry. There was always a big pot of beans soaking on the stove." Beans and peas can and should form the centerpiece of your diet. They are linked to longevity, good body weight (without feeling deprived), and prevention of many chronic diseases. That, plus some veggies in season (which are always cheapest) and some grain like oatmeal or rice bought in bulk, and you are good to go. My favorite eat-dinner-all-week recipe: split pea and veggie soup, priced as follows: 3 pounds split peas ($3.00) 1 bag carrots ($1) 1 onion ($1) 2 lbs roma tomatoes ($3.00) 1 loaf whole wheat bread ($3.00) Total: $11.00, keeping in mind that the veggies are optional so the price could be less. Cook the peas and veggies with a little seasoning to taste, and eat with the bread and you have enough to feed a family of four a healthy, protein rich dinner for three or four nights. Sure it gets dull, but it is healthy and nobody goes hungry. For breakfast, buy oatmeal in large containers ($3.00 or so) and you have breakfast for four for a week, easily. If you can afford it, buy a couple of dollars worth of bananas or raisins to flavor up the oatmeal. If you are lucky enough to have a membership to Sam's or Costco, or to have a friend who does, you can get three pounds of fresh broccoli for about five dollars, enough to feed a family several servings of this vitamin c-rich cancer fighter weekly. Eggs are a very cheap source of protein. Add a couple of dozen boiled eggs to the menu above, and that adds perhaps three dollars per week. To keep up a vegan/vegetarian diet as described above long-term, there would need to be a few additions and adaptations, such as, a B-12 supplement or just an ordinary multi-vitamin would be important. Also, in order to get adequate calcium from this diet, it would be necessary to add some additional greens like steamed kale, but you get the idea. We need to learn to think like this about food. Doctors and nutritionists are increasingly coming to understand that a diet focused on beans, grains, and unprocessed foods is the key to health and longevity. You may think it sounds like a deprivation diet, but give it a try, you might be amazed how quickly those foods come to taste good, and your health will improve. |

The airports are jammed with more people traveling than ever before. The stores are already packed with people waiting for shopping to begin for Christmas. Hotels are full. Freeways are bumper to bumper. Quoting: ProudFossil Yet you all are implying the economy is either dead or dying. What gives. Either there millions of people who are in dire straits and as implied by the complaints on this forum or the media is lying about the airports, malls, stores, vacations, etc. What gives? First off, did you personally COUNT all the people at all the airports or...are you relying on the news to tell you this? Yeah, that's what I thought! Here's something you might want to consider, there are less flights available thus, more people standing around at once! So not so sure much has changed as far as travelers. Also..... Stores are packed? Hotels are full? Freeways are bumper to bumper? There will always be people in stores and needing hotels and driving but where are you getting this information from? The fact is, there are more people hurting now than ever before. Stand back and watch how many people whip out an EBT card at the grocery store. I think THAT is more indicative of reality than judging whose doing what in these next 6 weeks! People DO try to maintain a semblance of holiday despite this crisis so if they are traveling or shopping, I bet it's due to some great sacrifice (like immense budgeting all year) I live 70 miles out in the country so my information(?) is coming from CNN and MSNBC. They show chaos at the airports because of 44,000,000 people going somewhere for Thanksgiving. We had to go to a funeral in Trinidad, Colorado on I-25. Bumper to Bumper in every city, especially Denver. It was so bad in Denver we had to use side streets which were still busy but at least moving. And the hotel in Trinidad was packed solid. I go to the grocery stores in town twice a month. There is always at least 3 to 4 people in every checkout line. You can't even park at the malls without having to walk a mile to get to the store. I had a question at the local Apple store and had to wait about 30 minutes before a clerk was free and there were about 20 clerks. Yes, there are a FEW who do not have money but they are rare and far between. Look at the unemployment. It is going down rapidly so people are working. Illegals are streaming here because the conditions here are so much better than anywhere else. So don't give me this bullshit about millions of children going hungry and millions of parents goin hungry. You must live way out in the country..are you kidding me? ..."The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Dry beans (pintos, navy, great northern, black eyed peas, kindey, small red, green peas, etc etc.), brown rice or white, a bit of smoked jowl or salt pork for seasoning, carrots, celery, onions, store brand canned tomatoes, pasta, corn meal. all cheap. Years ago I was living in, uh, straightened circumstances and would keep track of how much i spent on groceries. I would not go shopping until it got down to $0.15 per day. I could live on beans and corn bread indefinitely. ANY kind of garden helps immensely. A few fresh herbs and cherry tomatoes grown in a flower box make a big difference. |

That is true. I find it difficult to feel sorry for my two step-nieces who have each had multiple children with multiple men (one has two kids and the other four). They couldn't find a man and marry him and save a little cash before having those kids? Yet they sit and complain about how tough life is for them and how they never get any breaks and have to work so hard for minimum wage type jobs. Then they beg my sister and her husband for money (money which they don't have, either). Some people will always be in crisis because they don't have the capacity to plan out their lives. If we force these people to take care of themselves rather than rushing in with the free cash and stuff, they would be better off in the long-term. |
