Islands? Is that where this happened? [link to www.wcax.com]

It is true about suicides in Vermont, so sad, no help for folks here .

I know people that hate Grand Island and the isolation, I guess that drinking would be a problem, like most of northern Vt.

Yes that was a sad day for sure.
They are my neighbors.

Re: Vermont Police cars set on fire
I unfortunately live here (that's another story)

The big deal in the tiny but rich and uber contentious town hall meetings village of Snorwich is Cell Towers... they are unhappy with the size of the kickbacks and looking to juice the contract. Plus they are always trying to out Hanover Hanover (little Zurich on the Connecticut and home of Dartmouth) right across the river in American Switzerland (NH).

Digression re: out Hanover-ing Hanover - it's like a competition to be the biggest pretentious asshole - sort like two rich families who absolutely hate each other but live right across the street - both come from old money but only one of the comes from titled nobility and this that endlessly agonizes the other!

So now the cell tower consortium can add a minimum of 3 brand spanking new urban assault vehicles to their contract... I mean come on it's been described as a sleepy village but it has plenty of shekels (even though they hate Jews here in WASP land) and their ENTIRE fleet of recent model police vehicles was completely unsecured and unwatched even by cc cams? Come on you are kidding me right?

wow, is that what it has come to?

I lived in Norwich over 20 years ago and worked part time for the Valley News. I used to cover the town meetings for the paper

Hanover was always pricey...all the Dartmouth alumn who like to retire back in the Granite state and the usual social climbers, but back then they were more likely to go to Quechee

Norwich was quieter, lower key but I haven't been there in ten years, so I guess much has changed, and influx of ostentatious money can change things rapidly

That's a shame

Regarding the suicides, that is a problem throughout the pristine new england and atlantic canada area. Lots of depression behind those scenic farm house doors

Everyone dreams of moving to the country to live a better life for their children, but once the kids get to be teenagers they start gong a bit crazy out of boredom

Maybe local bored rich kids are to blame....just wondering

Hey there former Valley Snooze worker!

FYI My post was just vitriolic speculation based on listserv flame wars and reading between the lies in the VNews (actually they do a passable job particularly Kenyon - for putting out a daily rag in a region captured by and utterly dependent on a sole source employer - and I INCLUDE Htherm in the D-fold since it was a Thayer incubated project).

valley snooze! I haven't heard that in a while, LOL

Kenyon covers a lot of my old baileywick, like Hartford

hmmm, well on your other point re calendar change, I guess that rules that out...at least from the college kids, although in my experience Dartmouth kids rarely strayed far from Hanover, except to go to Killington, Okemo or Woodstock for skiing

hanging with townies was rarely their thing

I just know that when we moved to Weston CT, most of the crimes committed there were by the rich teenage kids in the neighborhood

I got to be friendly with the chief of police in Weston, and he told me once most of the thefts, even the little rashes of arson, were organized by high school kids, stealing from each other's parents

same as it ever was....

Police chief thinks maybe YOU think the town drunk did it, but HE wouldn't want to speculate...?

As for the arson investigation, Police Chief Robinson said he doesn’t have any reason to believe that it’s connected to the graffiti that has been sprayed on Norwich roads and bridges sporadically throughout the last few years.

Most of the graffiti included anti-Semitic statements aimed at the Norwich Police Department.

You could speculate that it had to do with the DUI that happened last week. Until we know what happened, we don’t want to speculate,” Robinson said.
