Been that way for a long time. Cars with that type of mileage are illegal here. Why? Cause your politicians, the guys you 'elect', are corrupt to the soul.

My diesel jetta gets 55 mpg all day long on the freeway. And my Dual Sport gets 96 Mpg.

because the auto makers know we americans are fuck-tards. the crappy gm 350 diesel of the 80s (kluged fucked over oldsmobile 350 converted to diesel) left a horribly bad taste in the american consumers mouths. we also are perceived as hating the "rattle box" idle of diesels. we have too many "enviro-tards" that see a little soot come out of a tailpipe, and scream "pollution!!" at the top of their lungs. our sulfur laden diesels that dominated until a few years ago promoted acid rain. we're too stupid to figure out how to use a block heater. most of all, during the mileage wars of the late 70s to 80s dealers got stuck losing dough on diesels that they couldnt give away for all those reasons. "once bitten, twice shy".

I'll agree that the coolest cars stay in Europe (and Japan). However, this is not the conspiracy you might think it is. An Imperial gallon (Europe) and the U.S. gallon are different with the Imperial gallon being the larger of the two.

This is why is appears that the cars sold in Europe get better gas mileage when in reality it's only that they measure using a larger gallon as the standard unit.

A US gallon is 0.8 of an Imperial gallon.

Plus, European cars, for the most part, are much smaller and lighter than US cars.

Saw the price of a catalytic converter for these diesel cars at work...cant remember the exact model. Was VW.

VW makes diesel motor in the USA sold only in Europe that gets 70 miles per US gallon. The reason that its not sold here is that it doesn't meet our pollution standards that are based on total emissions per gallon. But because of its high mileage, it pollutes less than these insane US standards on a per mile bases.

gets far more out of his car than out of a gas hybrid. Furthermore, diesel engines get better mileage after they are broken in. After 5000 miles gas mileage can increase by as much as 30%...BTW... Those are US gallons!
