An earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0, and corresponds to an energy release of √1000 ≈ 31.6 times greater.
OK so 31.6 times enegy, but 10 times larger, a bit comfusing. Can any1 clarify?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10961309 the scale is like the db scale, it's exponential
