Therapy to discover what the emptiness is that she's trying to fill with food.

And no pressure to lose weight - that will make her gain.

If she goes 100% raw food, she will automatically lose weight.

If she doesn't want to go to that extreme, at least give up wheat, sugar and processed foods.

Apparently, it helps to tell her how great she looks.

THEN, she will go and lose weight.

What worked best for me was high fat diet with intermitent fasting.

Google "keto + fast-5"

Re: how to help girlfriend that wants to lose weight?
The breads are worse than the dairy. Maybe if she can eat more whole foods (non-processed). Things like lean chicken, fish (especially salmon), fruits, veggies. But she can still eat some of the other things, like dairy. But she MUST exercise. Be active. It doesn't have to be a gym. Many people's eyes glaze over when they think about running on a treadmill in a gym. Mine included. Walk. Jog, Bicycle. Hike. Swim. Do fun stuff. And you could do it with her to make it more fun. Depending on the amount and type of exercise/activity she does, she wouldn't have to change her diet THAT much. But if she can knock out the sweets and breads (and some of the dairy), that'd be ideal. Get outside. Get some sun. The sun provides a certain type of Vitamin D that you can't get anywhere else. The sun has gotten a undeserved bad rap. Sure, too much sun is bad. Too much of almost anything is bad. But you HAVE to get SOME sun. So ya, get outside, get active, and alter the diet a bit. Also, for a lot of people, vigorous activity curbs the appetite, so maybe she won't desire so much food.
 Quoting: Thor's Hamster

Dude that is good advice, but she gets more exercise than me. She walks everyday and even more. She doesn't eat processed foods at all. She doesn't eat meat (like I said she is vegetarian).

I think you have good advice, but she does all of this if not more and still feels bad about her weight.

She just eats too much, and I don't know how to help her cause she acknowledges this too, but can't just stop eating.

It's some weird thing with her. She tells me all the time "I want to stop eating but can't cause it's comforting for me."

I'm like how the hell can you eat when you are full?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27387426

hypnosis.. hypnotic regression.. if shes eating to self soothe, there is some pain in her life she is hiding.. probably raped in the ass before would be my guess and on a subconscious level is in a defensive mode that involves fattening up to make herself a less attractive anal cum dumpster.

I'm dead serious btw.. op, you may have some splaining to do here... wtf

Remove her worry of how she looks by telling her that is not important except for vanity or trying to be acceptable to the world we know.

Tell he she is like-able no matter what her outsides look like.

Tell her that her outsides will stress her not only fat and anorexic..but dead in the end.

Tell her you never see an overweight marathon runner. Slackers don't want to hear that though. Always an excuse why they can't work out.

The beauty of being a distance runner is you can eat whatever you want and you still burn it off.

Re: how to help girlfriend that wants to lose weight?
Now mind you she is not some obese typical American that weighs 300lbs.

But she does like food, she loves cooking foods, and loves eating a lot of it.

But she is very self=-conscious of her weight and wants to lose weight, but yet can't stop eating more than what she needs.

Myself, I eat when I am full, and that is about half (if that) of what she eats.

I personally do not understand how she can eat so much and not be full, and then wants to eat dessert.

But I hate sweet foods anyway.

She's a vegetarian and mostly eats breads, vegetables, and fruits. But she always puts cheese, milk, butter, and a lot of fattening diary products in her food. And she eats twice as much as me.

I want to suggest to her a 1500 calorie diet, but she has been doing this "1 day fasting" thing. Where you eat normally one day, and maybe an apple or 2 the next day.

I saw this on a BBC documentary about fasting (and I think she watched it too... which is why I think she is doing this).

But I think a 1500 calorie diet would be better for her as I heard not eating makes you more fat (somehow? I don't know).

Any suggestions? Or is the 1500 calorie diet the way to go?

Recently saw a health show that suggested that many of the weight loss issues today is related to HORMONES! Say with me here.

1st we don't eat frequently throughout the day (need to eat every few hours to regulate blood sugar) this will keep our insulin from spiking. Must be small meals/snacks with protein always included (and very little if any carb or sugar).

2nd we eat foods with HFCS High Fructose Corn Syrup which does not signal the leptin in our brain (another hormone) to tell us we are full, so we eat, and eat.

3rd Once you start eating so much you trigger other hormones to go off balance.

4th waiting and not eating regular also causes stress which triggers (corisol) another hormone.

5th there is an epidemic of thyroid issues, due in part to the amount of chloride, bromide and fluoride that we consume daily that block the thyroids ability to uptake Iodine ... take Iodine, selenium, magnesium and some b vitamins daily and your thyroid can start functioning again. See tons more on the benefits of Iodine by searching it on this forum.

6th then there is the adrenal hormones that are often stress as well.

Well you get the picture...address the hormones at the same time as adjusting your eating and exercise regimen and she should be good to go. Add some detox in there and it's a winner.

The reason she is so hungry is that she is not getting enough protein. Vegetarianism is the hoax of the century.

She needs to cut the carbs, increase the protein.

Cut all grains and sugar, and possibly dairy if she is sensitive to it.

Butter is not the problem. Carbs are.

Oh...forgot one!!!!

7 We overeat because our bodies are looking for vitamins, minerals, good fats, protein (real nutrition that fuels the body) Most foods today are very lacking in these essential nutrients. So why not also add a good liquid, vitamin and mineral supplement also...like Vibe by Eniva (which we take and have for 6 yrs) or Dr. Wallachs stuff. Both are a bit pricy but worth it.

Re: how to help girlfriend that wants to lose weight?
It's very likely she is intolerant of wheat products which is causing her to have related health issues: fatty liver, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, cravings for starchy (especially sweet) foods. Up to 30% of people with European ancestry carry the gene to be at risk for some level of intolerance in a spectrum of slight to celiac (which in this country with racial mixing, means almost anyone can be at risk). Since it is genetic, look at family members - does she have members who have been diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity? Does her family have a lot of either fat or skinny people but not a lot of normal weight people? Is your friend near-sighted or have family members who are? Does she suffer from night-blindness? Does type 2 diabetes run in the family?

Do some research on this subject - it could save her life. I ran across it by accident - I went three days without eating wheat products and noticed I had a lot more energy. I tracked down what I had done differently and realized it was the wheat. I stopped eating gluten and the weight just dropped off even without dieting. Forty pounds worth in the span of three months! I should have known since my son showed up as being allergic to gluten grains in a blood test when he was young but nobody told me it was hereditary. My husband says he can tell when I slip and eat something wheat - like bread at a restaurant. He says my face gets slightly puffy.

Hmmmm - I think it's a conspiracy that the powers that be don't want us to know just how harmful our new hybrid wheat is to our health as an entire industry would suffer if we stopped eating wheat. Instead, they blame it on HFCS, chemicals in our food and such, telling us to eat more whole wheat products and we all just get fatter and fatter and more unhealthy.

Quoted for scientific accuracy. But there are good vegetable forms of protein, like hemp and temphe, which can help if she refuses to go carnivore.

[link to www.webmd.com]

"Diets with 30% protein are now being considered "reasonable" and the term "high protein diet" is now reserved for diets with over 50% protein.

Diets higher in protein and moderate in carbs -- along with regular exercise -- are often thought by experts to reduce blood fats. It also helps maintain lean tissue while burning fat for fuel. And this happens without dieters being sidetracked with constant hunger.

Researchers don't understand exactly how protein works to reduce appetite. They think that it may be because a protein causes the brain to receive lower levels of appetite-stimulating hormones. Fewer insulin spikes lead to less fluctuation of sugar levels -- and therefore fewer cravings. It may also be due to eating fewer carbs or the specific protein's effect on hunger hormones and brain chemistry"

Compulsive eating? Sometimes its a sign of pancreatic cancer

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

An insulinoma is a tumor of the pancreas that is derived from beta cells and secretes insulin.

Beta cells secrete insulin in response to increases in blood glucose. The resulting increase in insulin acts to lower blood glucose back to normal levels at which point further secretion of insulin is stopped. In contrast, the secretion of insulin by insulinomas is not properly regulated by glucose and the tumors will continue to secrete insulin causing glucose levels to fall further than normal.

As a result patients present with symptoms of low blood glucose (hypoglycemia), which are improved by eating. The diagnosis of an insulinoma is usually made biochemically with low blood glucose, elevated insulin, proinsulin and C-peptide levels and confirmed by localizing the tumor with medical imaging or angiography. The definitive treatment is surgery.

Water fast for a few weeks to a month, depending on what she wants to lose. The detox symptoms might suck for the first ten days or so and they differ in intensity from person to person. If she can handle that, she'll have proven to herself that she has a strong enough will to completely control her desire for food.
