Nice name for it, right up our alley,

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

A corona is a type of plasma "atmosphere" of the Sun or other celestial body, extending millions of kilometers into space, most easily seen during a total solar eclipse, but also observable in a coronagraph. The word "corona" itself derived from the Latin, meaning crown, which in turn came from the Ancient Greek κορώνη (korōnē) meaning "garland" or "wreath".

Read in a book that Oil Of Oregano is great for this type of virius. Start to take it they said at the first signs of an outbreak and continue to use it daily. One drop under the tongue 12hrs apart everyday is all thats needed.

I use that stuff all the time. Have for years. Never get sick ever.

Re: New SARS outbreak on the horizon - update Jordan deaths confirmed -9 confirmed cases
The WHO called Friday on countries to "continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections" in general, adding that it was working to provide guidance related specifically to the novel coronavirus."Until more information is available, it is prudent to consider that the virus is likely more widely distributed than just the two countries which have identified cases," it cautioned.Countries "should consider testing of patients with unexplained pneumonias for the new coronavirus even in the absence of travel or other associations with the two affected countries," it said.According to a study published by the journal of the American Society for Microbiology earlier this week, the mystery virus appears to be most closely linked to viruses found in bats."The virus is most closely related to viruses in bats found in Asia, and there are no human viruses closely related to it," Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Center in The Netherlands, who led the study, told the journal."Therefore, we speculate that it comes from an animal source," he added. NOVEL CORONAVIRUS - SAUDI ARABIA (18): WHO, NEW CASES, FAMILY CLUSTER, FATALITY

A ProMED-mail post
[link to www.promedmail.org]
[To summarize what appears to be going on right now is that there are now 6 cases of illness with the novel coronavirus [nCoV] confirmed and reported to WHO. Of these 6 cases, 4 have occurred in Saudi Arabian citizens and 2 have occurred in Qatari citizens. ProMED-mail has reported on 4 of these cases in prior reports -- 3 in Saudi Arabian citizens and 1 in a Qatari citizen (see prior ProMED-mail reports Novel coronavirus - Saudi Arabia (17): 4th case, RFI 20121121.1418018, Novel coronavirus - Saudi Arabia (15): new case 20121104.1391285, Novel coronavirus - Saudi Arabia (03): UK HPA, WHO, Qatar 20120923.1305982, Novel coronavirus - Saudi Arabia (02): additional cases, RFI 20120923.1305931, Novel coronavirus - Saudi Arabia: human isolate 20120920.1302733).

Of these 6 cases, 2 had fatal outcomes (the 1st reported case mentioned in ProMED-mail archive 20120920.1302733, and one of the newly reported cases in the above reports of this update). In addition, the WHO report mentions that 2 of the newly confirmed cases were epidemiologically linked as family members (one case recovered and one fatality), and that there were 2 additional family members with similar clinical presentations of whom one was found negative for the nCoV while the other (a fatality) was still pending laboratory results.

Information on the full clinical presentations of cases has only been available for the 1st 2 cases reported in September 2012 -- severe pneumonia with renal failure. Detailed clinical information on the more recent cases reported this month (November 2012) are not as yet available. At present it appears as though "severe acute respiratory infections (SARI)" is the operative clinical description that should lead clinicians to obtain specimens for testing for infection with this nCoV.

The presence of cases in the same family can either be a sign of human to human transmission or could be related to exposure of the family members to the same common source such as farm animals or bat excreta or other bat bodily fluids (the nCoV is genetically related to known bat CoVs (coronaviruses)). To date, it does appear as though this new nCoV is not easily transmitted from human to human (the absence of prior secondary cases in close contacts at home, in the community and among healthcare workers caring for the cases). If human to human transmission is identified in the above mentioned family cluster, one wonders if there would be a similar situation as had been seen with the SARS CoV where there were some individuals who were responsible for "super spreading events" and were responsible for infecting many other individuals, while the majority of individuals were not. (see the Consensus document on the epidemiology of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) available at: [link to www.who.int] Early attention to universal precautions including respiratory secretions and bodily fluids should prevent these superspreading events from occurring in the healthcare environment where nosocomial transmission is always a concern.

The decision to increase heightened surveillance for SARI related to infection with this nCoV worldwide, irrespective of known travel history or known contact with travelers is a prudent decision. As there are more questions than answers about the epidemiology and transmission of this nCoV, the possibility of having had more "silent" spread with less severe clinical presentations separating the chain of identifiable transmission between infected individuals needs to be considered early on in the investigations related to this novel new agent. Epidemiologically there has been a major population movement through this region recently. This moderator also wonders if specimens were available to retrospectively test for this nCoV infection in the cluster of SARI cases reported in a hospital based outbreak in Jordan in April 2012 mentioned in the prior ProMED-mail report Novel coronavirus - Saudi Arabia (04): RFI, Jordan, April 2012 20120925.1308001.

We await further information on the results of laboratory and epidemiologic investigations as well as clinical presentations of the confirmed cases.

Re: New SARS outbreak on the horizon - update Jordan deaths confirmed -9 confirmed cases
I live in Toronto and I saw first hand what SARS can do.

438 people were infected with a total death toll of 43. These numbers may seem small, but there were literally thousands of people who were quarantined during this crisis.

In order to keep the infectious numbers down, we paid people who were under quarantine to stay at home to ensure others would not be infected. The city almost went bankrupt in the process. Everything was effectively shut down (concerts, movies and social events) and restaurants were empty.

Trust me everyone. It's real, it's bad and unlike seasonal flu, it infects and kills people in their prime.

No one wants this type of doom. Be vigilant.

Taiwan-Virus reported in Middle East, DOH issues warning
Four new cases of acute respiratory infection by the “novel” coronavirus have been reported in the Middle East, as Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) of the Department of Health issued a warning to the public over the virus yesterday...
..Scientists have not yet determined how contagious the new type of virus is, or how it spreads.
CDC Officials said that the Saudi Arabia cases occurred in families living in close quarters, indicating that this new coronavirus likely infects humans via person-to-person transmission
.
The CDC said measures are being implemented to enhance virus detection at Taiwan’s port-of-entry checkpoints, while urging those who plan to travel to Saudi Arabia or Qatar t.. [link to www.taipeitimes.com]

"As with most emerging epidemics, we usually ignore them until people start dying. If the same logic applies here, it’s time to begin paying attention to the new SARS-like virus found in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. While only six cases have been identified so far, two of the patients died, suggesting that the survival rate isn’t stellar."

"On Friday, November 23, the WHO said in an outbreak update that it had registered four more cases and one of the new patients had died."

WHO Confirms Third Fatal Novel Beta Coronavirus Case
Recombinomics Commentary 15:30
November 29, 2012

The clinical picture in all cases was an acute respiratory infection presenting with signs and symptoms of pneumonia. Four patients developed acute renal failure; one of these died. The remaining three patients had pneumonia that required intensive support, without renal failure, and recovered. Three confirmed cases and the one probable case all belong to the same family and were living in the same household.

The above comments are from the WHO November 28 guidelines on surveillance testing for the novel betacoronavirus first reported in September. The update increases the number of confirmed cases to seven and cites four cases with renal failure. The first two cases had renal failure and media reports indicated the two fatal cases (70 year old father and his son) also had renal failure. Therefore the 7th confirmed case would be the father (70M) and the WHO comments above should read that one of the cases survive b [link to www.recombinomics.com]

Outbreak Specialists Track Down Recent Coronavirus

Health officials are trying to figure out if the virus is moving from person to person

By Helen Branswell

Maria Zambon was having déjà vu. Earlier this fall, she found out about a new coronavirus that had come seemingly from nowhere to kill a Saudi man in Jeddah in June and seriously sicken another. The survivor had been flown from Qatar to a London hospital. His lungs were overwhelmed with infection, his kidneys failing. Virologists at Erasmus Medical Center, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, were already working on an isolate from the Saudi man to decode the virus's genetic sequence. They named the virus HCoV-EMC, short for human coronavirus and the institution's initials.

The situation reminded Zambon, director of reference microbiology for Britain's Health Protection Agency, of the SARS outbreak of 2003, which spread from China to as far as Toronto and killed 916 people. Fortunately, the recent coronavirus appears to be emerging more slowly than SARS did (also a coronavirus). To date, only six cases have been reported—four in Saudi Arabia and two in Qatar. Two of the infections have been fatal. The gnawing concern, however, is that the virus will start spreading from person to person, fanning out more broadly to infect people around the globe.

A recently discovered cluster of illnesses in Saudi Arabia has raised concerns that the virus may be able to move from person to person. Four men who lived in the same household in Riyadh became sick with similar symptoms within a short period of time. Two of the men tested positive for the virus. The two others—one of whom died—are currently classified as probable cases. Their infection status may remain ambiguous.

Novel coronavirus infection - update

30 NOVEMBER 2012 - In addition to the fatal case of novel coronavirus in Saudi Arabia reported to WHO on 28 November, two fatal cases in Jordan have been reported to WHO today, bringing the total of laboratory-confirmed cases to nine.

The latest confirmed case from Saudi Arabia occurred in October 2012 and is from the family cluster of the two cases confirmed earlier.

The two cases from Jordan occurred in April 2012. At that time, a number of severe pneumonia cases occurred in the country and the Ministry of Health (MOH) Jordan promptly requested a WHO Collaborating Centre for Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (NAMRU – 3) team to immediately assist in the laboratory investigation. The NAMRU-3 team went to Jordan and tested samples from this cluster of cases.

On 24 April 2012 the NAMRU-3 team informed the MOH that all samples had tested negative for known coronaviruses and other respiratory viruses. As the novel coronavirus had not yet been discovered, no specific tests for it were available.

In October 2012, after the discovery of the novel coronavirus, stored samples were sent by MOH Jordan to NAMRU-3. In November 2012 ..

Three people have now died from the new coronavirus in the Middle East — two of whom were relatives from the same Saudi Arabian household, the World Health Organization confirmed Friday.
There are now a total of seven confirmed cases, which is up one from last week. An eighth case has been deemed “probable” but confirmation of infection may not be possible, according to WHO spokesperson Glenn Thomas, who said tests are still underway.

Background and summary of novel coronavirus infection – as of 30 November 2012

Over the past two months, WHO has received reports of nine cases of human infection with a novel coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses; different members of this family cause illness in humans and animals. In humans, these illnesses range from the common cold to infection with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) coronavirus (SARS CoV).

Thus far, the cases reported have come from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. All patients were severely ill, and five have died.

The two Qatari patients are not link
ed. Both had severe pneumonia and acute renal failure. Both are now recovering.

A total of five confirmed cases have been reported from Saudi Arabia. The first two are not linked to each other; one of these has died. Three other confirmed cases are epidemiologically linked and occurred in one family living within the same household; two of these have died. One additional family member in this household also became ill, with symptoms similar to those of the confirmed cases. This person has recovered and tested negative, by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, for the virus.

Two confirmed cases have been reported in Jordan. Both of these patients have died. These cases were discovered through testing of stored samples from a c.. [link to swineflumagazine.blogspot.com]

Identical Novel Beta Coronavirus Sequences Signal H2H
Recombinomics Commentary 21:00
November 30, 2012

A paper “Recovery from severe coronavirus infection” published in the Saudi Med J by Dr Ziad Memesh and colleagues describes the third confirmed novel betacornavirus case (45M), which was announced by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health on November 4, the date of discharge.

The case is a gym-teacher from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia who developed symptoms on October 9. His conditioned worsened and he visited the emergency room on October 10 and 12. His conditioned continued to worsen and was intubated for mechanical ventilation on October 13 and transferred to the ICU. Kidney failure led to hemodialysis between October 15-23.

The novel betacornavirus was detected in respiratory samples using PCR tests for the upstream region of the E gene as well as ORF1B and N genes. The paper included two sets of sequences for two regions, a 311 Bp fragment of ORF1B (positions 18105-18414) and a 409 BP fragment of E (positions 27278-27868). These sequences were from samples collected from case 1 (60M businessman from Bisha, treated in Jeddah, confirmed at Eras [link to www.recombinomics.com]

Saudi Arabia reports new coronavirus case; UK wonders about 4th case in cluster

By: Helen Branswell, The Canadian Press
TORONTO - Saudi Arabia has discovered another infection with the novel coronavirus, the World Health Organization announced Thursday.
The infected person was hospitalized in late January and died on Feb. 10, but confirmation of the infection was only made Feb. 18, the WHO said in a statement...In addition, there are nearly a dozen cases the WHO considers "probable" infections — people who were exposed to cases and who later became sick but who were not tested or weren't tested in time. If an infected person had recovered from the illness, current tests — which look for virus DNA in mucus — would not find evidence of infection...
..The WHO revised its new coronavirus case definition this week to remind doctors not to automatically rule out people with mild symptoms when they look for possible cases...
Others share the WHO's concern about the possibility of missed cases. In fact, several of the researchers who were key players in the response to the 2002-2003 SARS epidemic admit the patterns they are seeing bring back memories.
"It is certainly beginning to look concerning, given the obvious fact that there can be onward transmission," said Malik Peiris, chair of the department of microbiology at the University of Hong Kong...The fact that we are finding these cases in Europe and not anywhere else, that has to raise suspicion," Fouchier says. "What we're seeing in Europe is just the tip of the iceberg and we really have no clue how big the iceberg is." lots more here [link to www.winnipegfreepress.com] and at my blog.

They are not done breaking the news to us yet and are doing it GENTLY. That frickin guy died almost 2 weeks ago and they finally gettin around to telling us. Confirmed on the 18th, and they already knew it but were probably tracking his family and contacts. There should soon be a travel alert for Saudi Arabia and probably the whole ME.. which is what it will take to try and calm this shit down. However now that it has been found in the U.K., it may be too late to get a handle on it.

Re: New SARS outbreak on the horizon - update Jordan deaths confirmed -9 confirmed cases
incubation period last for 60 days
this rings alarm bells with me ...means people are carrying it for a longer period infecting others before they go down with it very worrying
