Thank you for bringing attention to this topic, OP - there is a lot of misinformation out there regarding this date. Here is a show done about it on the History Channel. It is very informative (though long) tying the predictions of Nostradamus with the similarities between independent cultures (Myans, Aztecs, Egyptians) regarding this event. What I like about it is that it combines scientific and astronomical data with a cultural folklore backdrop.
