Saptaparna - the seven fold man
So this is one way of dividing the constitution of spiritual man, according to teosophical doctrine. it is a good starting point to clarify different abstract points. if anyone would want to discuss

the higher triad:
1. spirit (atman); 2. spiritual soul (buddhi); 3. mind (manas)

the lower quaternary: 4. animal desires and passions (kama); 5. life or vital principle (prana); 6. astral body (linga-sharira); 7. physical body (sthula-sharira).

1. Atman
The essential self, pure consciousness. The essential and radical power or faculty which gives us and every other entity its sentient consciousness of pure selfhood.
2. Buddhi
The faculty or spiritual organ which manifests as intuition, understanding, judgement, discrimination. It is the inseparable veil or garment of atman.
3. Manas
The centre or organ of the ego-consciousness in man and in any other quasi-selfconscious entity; the seat of the ‘I am I’.
4. Kama
The organ or seat of the vital psycho-electric impulses, desires, aspirations, considered in their energic aspect, and therefore the driving force in the human constitution. As every principle is sevenfold, there is a divine and spiritual kama as well as a grossly emotional kama, with all intermediate stages.
5. Prana
‘Life’, or more accurately the electromagnetic veil or ‘electrical field’ manifesting in the individual as vitality.
6. Linga-sharira
The astral model-body, slightly more ethereal than the physical body; the astral framework around which the physical body is built, atom for atom, and from which it develops as growth proceeds.
7. Sthula-sharira
The physical body. Strictly speaking, it is not a real ‘principle’, but functions as the common ‘carrier’ of all the inner constitution during any lifetime on earth.

Re: Saptaparna - the seven fold man
according to theosophical doctrine the spiritual evolution of humanity proceeds in 7 rounds composed each of 7 races

as helena roerich puts it:
" Each planetary cycle, or Round, has its limit for the development of the human organism, and with each new cycle the degree of achievement rises. Thus, Manas, or the highest intelligence on our Earth will receive its full development in the Fifth Round and in its Fifth Race. Meanwhile, we are still in the Fourth Round and in the time of the consummation of its Fifth Race; hence, for our Round, Manas has already reached the apogee of its development. And with the birth of the sixth Race, or rather, with its confirmation, because there are quite a few people who already belong to the sixth Race, we shall enter the epoch of the development of spiritual consciousness, whose foundation lies in the heart. "

Manas is rational mind, and it seems it has achieved perfection under current biological framework.

In the next race the perfection of the Buddhi, which is spiritual understanding/intuition will be achieved.

This is all Awakening is about, the activation of the spiritual organ.
And what is more interesting is that the primary center of the sixth principle is not the pinneal but the center of the heart:

"You associate the sixth principle with the heart, and this is quite correct, as nothing can escape the heart. All energies are transmuted there. But there are many who are accustomed to connect the sixth principle, i.e., Buddhi, with the brain center, and they may oppose you. Nevertheless, precisely the sixth principle, in its highest aspect, is manifested in the heart. "

Re: Saptaparna - the seven fold man
a short phrase speaking of the importance of joining the MInd and the Heart:

"The Duad, consisting of the seventh and sixth principles, does not act as a conscious entity on the physical plane of existence. Thus, in order to reach true immortality and to achieve a conscious manifestation on all planes, that is, to become an Arhat, a Buddha or a Dhyan Chohan, man must connect the three principles (the fourth, fifth and seventh) here on Earth and merge them together, precisely in the sixth principle. The seventh principle is just the eternal vital force which exists throughout the whole Cosmos. Therefore, perhaps it would be better to say: Absolute Intelligence and Perfect Heart, being one and the same Origin, correspond to the higher aspect of man, wherein his spirit, intellect, and all his feelings are fierily transmuted and are centralized in the heart - in short, when the intellect becomes a heart and the heart becomes an intellect. With this understanding the reader will be able to avoid many perplexities."

""We are about to found a magazine of our own, Lucifer. Don’t allow yourself to be frightened: it is not the devil, into which the Catholics have falsified the name of the Morning Star, sacred to all the ancient world, of the ‘bringer of light,’ Phosphoros, as the Romans often called the Mother of God and Christ. And in St. John’s Revelation does it not say, ‘I, Jesus, the morning star’? I wish people would take this to mind, at least. It is possible that the rebellious angel was called Lucifer before his fall, but after his transformation he must not be called so...."

"Open your columns to free and fearless discussion, and do as the theosophical periodicals have ever done, and as LUCIFER is now preparing to do. The 'bright Son of the morning' fears no light. He courts it, and is prepared to publish any inimical contributions (couched, of course, in decent language), however much at variance with his theosophical views. He is determined to give a fair hearing in any and every case, to both contending parties and allow things and thoughts to be judged on their respective merits. For why, or what should one dread when fact and truth are one's only aim?" H.P. Blavatsky in Lucifer, October, 1887."
