This makes sense. Conservatives can't stand anyone smarter than they are, or that is different.

Their fear controls everything they do and they can't understand, or tolerate, anyone that is scary to them.

We can allow for fear of homosexuals, since they might want to have sex with you. That's a fear response, but a rational one, if you aren't very bright. Big gays would then, no doubt, be scarier...

Of course the other half of the problem there is that the fear may also be internally generated, then misplaced. Conservatives that fear they might be homosexual, or at least attracted to other men, will often turn these feelings to disgust and anger, trying to mask their own internal fear.

People on the left make the choices that aren't fear responsive. Giving money to those in need for instance, threatens a conservative, who will fear there won't be enough for them, or that it will take things away from them in the form of taxes.

Liberals are more likely to realize that those taxes won't really harm them.

So on and so forth.

Your sister in law is probably a bit left leaning too, so when she saw a problem she called to deal with it. You on the other hand chose to come to a posting board and seek reassurance that you weren't in the wrong.

Conservative doesn't mean coward, but it does tend to mean a person responsive to fear input.

Ask ten liberals and most will ask for a light to be turned on.
