They cannot dive into the past of their own ex-reality.
Any measurement of any type is influencing the measured target.
There is no such thing as unobtrusive measurement.
Every time you try to peek into the past, “the past” will protect itself and will avoid/trick you, by showing you the past of an alternative reality (not your timeline); and every time you dive into the past, you create a new alternative reality (a new branch from your timeline)
All the alternative realities (a growing but finite number) are generated by all the time travels made in this universe.
Shorter jumps, increase the chance to “land” on a narrow angle timeline (not that different from the jumping path) .
That’s why John Titor’s predictions were not “that” accurate.

Not a phone based on technology as we know it today (Cell towers, etc). Can you explain what is going on?

Now I don't remember that, only that we all lived a much more benevolent past. Think of it, that things could be changed that much, nothing is what it seems.
Still good times ahead and it never ends those good times. When we do this, going from one dimension to another while alive, everything in this universe grows. Everybody seems to be in the wings watching... waiting for us to do something. What we are going to do? I don't know.....
I have a feeling it might just be finding out what has really been going on. How will we react?
