I am a hairstylist in So. Cal. Just in the last month I have noticed I have some hair loss. I mentioned to a co-worker and she said, she and her mom have just noticed hair loss too!

So we now are starting to hear, or are now paying attention, to many of our women customers saying the same thing.

My thought is Fukushima, but I get laughed at for this view, so I am keeping that part to myself, but I am serious, that this seems to be now showing up in us.

If you live on the west coast, do any of you feel your hair has thinned recently?

MY thinking is it has taken this long to get into us and show subtle effects, and if true, it can only get worse.

I'm in Oregon, my hair has been freaking me out I've lost so much in the last few months.

My hair loss is minor, any could even be normal, but I am paying close attention. If I feel any other weird effects, I will see a doctor. Right now I still feel well.

You on the other hand should go to the doctor if you are losing a lot of hair. As a hairstylist, I see people lose hair, sometimes from medications, sometimes from fluctuations in hormones (like after having a child), and sometimes do to an illness. If it is more than the periodic shedding of hair, take it serious.

Beyond that, this should be documented....hair loss epidemics, if there is one.

I personally was only in the states for a few days after the first round of -air- exposure(well, during it), and my hair does not just thin out, I lose dozens of strands per day, probably more(mostly notice when taking a shower, all the hair that accumulates on my fingers as I wash my hair). They seem to grow back...not quite sure if all of them do. The loss has also been lessening slightly with time. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time, eh?

I wonder just how long it will take before the fukushima disaster is taken seriously, when people start losing their hair, cancer, plants dying, animals dying at an alarming rate. Your right, man is the blight on the planet...the planet has been cursed by man.

oh yikes .... A friend of mine has an all expense ticket to hell, and has been told the Devil is NOT there every week, but when he IS, any retune trips are canceled !

Should he take a chance that the Devil will NOT show up, just to say he's been there ?

Are YOU sure a little bit of radiation exposure will NOT eventually affect YOU/kill you ?

Do you play Russian roulette often for FUN ?

I understand your point AC but the poster said they lived in California. I don't see CA as a much safer place to be. In the end we are all screwed. Though my response might have sounded cavalier, it really is more of a defeatist stance at this point. All the radiation poured out of FUKU since it happened has already caused terrible effects. I don't think at this point there is anything we can do to change anything.

This post just connected 4 separate incidences going on here. 2 different neighbors have dogs that started losing their hair in the last year. A co-worker has been complaining of hair loss. And a cousin is experiencing what they suspect is thyroid problems. These issues have all arose within the last 12-18 mos. Very odd if coincidence.

Re: FISH FRY from FUKU? Epidemic occurring with coral, fish, turtles in Hawaii...USGS alarmed
Rapidly-spreading disease in Hawaii coral — New strain of cyanobacteria blamed — Fish with lesions, turtles having problems — Big concern whether infectious to humans —“Truly an unusual event”...
A report by the U.S. Geological Survey finds that an outbreak of coral disease along Kauai’s North Shore is an epidemic.

Dr. Thierry Work [...] said the disease is rapidly spreading. A report released Wednesday said microscopic changes in tissue suggest the corals are under some type of stress.

Another big concern is whether this new strain of cyanobacteria is infectious to humans and marine life. Work says he and other scientists involved in the ongoing study have spotted puffer fish with skin discoloration and unusual lesions on their fins. [...]

The bottom line, according to Work, is that Kaua‘i’s reefs are heavily degraded and infected with a rapidly-spreading white coral disease unlike any seen here before.

I know Dr. Thierry and have worked with him here in American Samoa. If he says there is a major problem I guarantee you there is. I'll find out what I can from this end and post any updates on www.corl.org

From April 7th, 2012:

USGS issues announcement about polar bears with oozing sores, hair loss in Alaska — Gov’t testing for radiation — 3 of 4 captured yesterday affected — Similar symptoms as recent mystery seal deaths

We have never been told the outcome of the testing of the seals and polar bears...USGS confirmed there was radiation present but at this point they had not done individual isotopic testing.

 Quoting: RadChick

From that article:

Reuters: “Preliminary studies [last year of sickened seals and walruses] showed that radiation poisoning is not the cause, temporarily ruling out a theory that the animals were sickened by contamination from the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan.”

So, what IS the cause and why does enews keep doing this (linking everything to Fukushima when it isn't clear)?

Don't get me wrong - Fukushima is an unfolding disaster but I HATE the sloppy alarmist reports on that site. The TRUTH is alarming but it needs to be reported accurately and without jumping to conclusions. If they want to speculate that the animal problems are a result of radioactive contamination then they should be clear that they're speculating vs. implying links that have not been established.

After reviewing older underwater video footage he shot along Kaua‘i’s North Shore, Lilley tracked the disease back to 2007, which he said is important for giving scientists a timeline.

So, this is not Fukushima related, either.

OK I will update here also.

I'll check with Dr. Douglas Fenner on Monday to get some more info on what's going on up in Hawaii.

Thanks for the info. I live on the big island of hawaii.
My daughter was snorkeling on the Kona side last week and was very upset over all the dead coral, she said the whole reef was just about dead and just last year it was fine....
My son reported that lots of Japanese trash is washing up on the eastern shores as of a month or so ago.
And guess what I've developed hypothyroidism.....

Warmer water temperatures brought on by climate change stress corals because they are very sensitive to changes in temperature. If water temperatures stay higher than usual for many weeks, the zooxanthellae they depend on for some of their food leave their tissue. Without zooxanthellae, corals turn white because zooxanthellae give corals their color. White, unhealthy corals are called bleached. Bleached corals are weak and less able to combat disease.

You can be sure it's a combination of all the junk we are spewing into the oceans, radiation from Fukushima and global warming...
