Man - the whole deal is kind of a bummer!

The best english translation seems to the the KJV...but it bugs me to read that old english!

The NKJV seems to be "not as bad as the rest"...but still has translation problems...for example, check this out:

KJV -

John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Now compare NKJV -

John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.

Notice the KJV says "...*by* Him all things..." verses NKJV or MKJV says "...through Him...."

Although "technically" both are a "correct" translation...the fact of the matter is that the NKJV / MKJV "could" present Jesus as an "agent" that was "used" for creation (as the JW's claim) or, do a comparison between versions on Matt 17:19-22 - most of the newer versions, including ESV, which totally bums me out, omit verse :21 althogether! Now if all you had was an ESV, or NIV or __________, fill in the blank, how would you know that some of the more cantankerous demons only come out by prayer and fasting?

I'm in the same boat as you...I use the MKJV and the ESV but I keep an interlinear Greek / English version open right next to both Bibles!

Freaking sucks doesn't it?

Brother, it doesn't suck! It is like that for a reason, a very important reason, and I hope that once you see it, you will no longer be bogged down in it, but rather rejoice! Check this out:

Ok here it is! The KJV with Strongs Concordance built right in!

It is called the King James Greek, Hebrew key word study bible! It is the only bible to study if you want to go 5 or 10 layers deep!

here is a link to it!

[link to www.amazon.com]
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28418104

This bible has the Concordance numbering system in it with the greek and strongs concordance in the back. it also has the best margin notes i have ever seen...

I will give you a example!

Revelation 18:23

18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

do you see the word sorceries in the above verse, well here is the definition from the back of my bible for that word:

AV - sorcery 2, witchcraft 1; 3

1) the use or the administering of drugs
2) poisoning
3) sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and
fostered by it
4) metaph. the deceptions and seductions of idolatry

from pharmakon (a drug, i.e. spell-giving potion); n m

AV - sorcerer 1; 1

1) one who prepares or uses magical remedies
2) sorcerer

Now how would you have known that that word meant pharmaceuticals if you did not look it up in the concordance?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28418104

I too use the Strong's concordance. But here's where some get mixed up.

Although pharmaceuticals, was later derived from the word pharmakon, it's not the same thing.

The term "pharmakos" later became the term "pharmakeus" which refers to "a drug, spell-giving potion, druggist, poisoner, by extension a magician or a sorcerer."[4] A variation of this term is "pharmakon" a complex term meaning sacrament, remedy, poison, talisman, cosmetic, perfume or intoxicant.[5] From this, the modern term "pharmacology" emerged.[6]
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

The 'sorcerer' not only uses drugs / concoctions to harm people, but they also combine this with spells and incantations, which is more like a witchdoctor / shaman, and certainly not a pharmacist.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28380145

I am seeing "pharmakeia"...which is "sorcery"

I have the Expositors Study Bible, it is KJV Bible with notes after most verses! It will be your favorite Bible and so easy to understand with the notes!
 Quoting: aChristian 28407121

You just have to be careful, because we have a very dangerous habit of thinking of the commentaries as just as important as the Scripture they are explaining. I used to do the study Bible thing too, but too many times I caught myself letting the footnotes sway my understanding of the actual passage. I think a Thompson's Chain or a Strong's Bible is just fine, because you are actually using the Bible interpret itself, instead of some fallible human making assumptions...

I do agree with you, was just offering a decent study Bible to Op. The KJ language and some vocab words may be difficult to understand for new readers, even with the help of the Holy Spirit. Not all Christians are the same, some have to take more baby steps with the Holy Spirit.

In all honesty, you should seek guidance from Father. This is a very important topic to know, because the false bibles are inhabited with wickedness. It causes failure of salvation and praise to evil. Not only that, but many have satanic images as well.

(KJV)Proverbs 3:5-7
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. [7] Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord , and depart from evil.

(KJV)John 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

(KJV)John 17:17
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

1 Timothy 3:16 KJV
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Isaiah 9:6 KJV
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Mark 16:16 KJV
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Acts 2:38 KJV
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Romans 8:6-9 KJV
6) For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8) So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9) But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Matthew 15:8-9 KJV
8) This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9) But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Acts 5:29 KJV
Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

I strongly hope that you shall love god, but the words are not love, imho, i'm pointing out that words aren't sufficient to claim your fear of God, you must do like in the middle age, flee from to much wealth. Generally, americans are ostentatious of too much wealth, and that wealth one day will condemn you, with all the love God has for you-

It is written:

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

I haven't read through the responses. Being lazy and tired.

I personally like the New Century Version. It's used in children's bibles and for me, is the easiest to understand. I believe it is translated from original text or whatever and translated to plain English.

If a child can understand the language used, so can i. Reading the Bible was a chore until i discovered this version. :-) good luck in finding the right version for you.

Regarding Mathew 17:21, here's an interesting take

This verse is not found in many of the modern translations (ESV, NET, NIV, NJB, NLT, NRSV and is written in italics in the NAS and footnoted as lacking in the "early manuscripts"). So why shouldn't this verse be included in these translations? Simply because a wide range of the early manuscripts and translations did not include this verse..

From my studies, I know Catholic exorcists, will fast prior to an exorcism, with casting out demons. Although not conclusive, this may give an indication of the effectiveness of fasting and prayer, and hence the validity of the verse (Mathew 17:21).

That's what i do, i don't mind too often on a wealthy lifestyle, i follow a strict disciple, too much "gold" make me sick. I live in a humble fashion, for self-sustainment and i don't think that gathering too much is not good for your soul, the flesh is the best way to corrupt your sould, and so you are invited to renounce too much wealth of the present times.
It is also for your education to live a sober life, waiver is educational lest that God will give up on you.

You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.[a] 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.

Not every professing Christian in America is a hypocrit. Get off the high horse, there are multitudes of many God loving, God fearing Christians in America.

Still...looks more like a broad hatred for Americans rather then seeking union and fellowship with your brothers and sister here!

Where's the example of brothers and sisters you point towards that only expound "words" rather then love?

I say all this for your sake, not just Americans, i strongly state this towards europe as well. Vatican is too rich: IOR exactly.
It's a shame to me

Matt 7:21-23

It's not the *we* know Jesus...it's that Jesus *knows* us!

I respectfully encourage you to hang out and get to know the brothers and sisters here on glp before you blanket the believers here as weak and misguided! If you hang around awhile I think you'll find some pretty solid hard core believers committed to doing His Will!
