As the Mayans correctly noted, this cycle takes 26,000 years to complete. It is also worth noting that there will be a triple alignment - the center of the galaxy, the Sun, and the Earth - on Dec 21, 2012. Whether something cataclysmic happens on that day or not does not change the fact that we are currently passing through the galactic plane, a point where the gravitational force upon the Earth multiplies due to the black hole mentioned above.
