Third storm in five days wreaks havoc on U.S. West Coast

Posted on December 3, 2012

December 3, 2012 – CALIFORNIA - Blasting out of the Pacific, the third and most powerful “Pineapple Express” storm of the week swept over the Bay Area Sunday morning, dumping heavy rain on a region already soaked to the roots and reeling from power outages and flooding. “It’s a mess,” said CHP Officer James Evans. “We’ve got flooding everywhere.” The triple whammy toppled trees and power lines, snarled traffic, caused accidents on slippery roadways and cut electrical power to about 297,000 customers in the region, including BART riders who were stranded on subway cars during a harrowing, one-hour outage early Sunday morning. Measured by rainfall and wind, this was one of the most powerful storm events since October 2009, said Jan Null, a meteorologist with the Golden Gate Weather Services. Pineapple Express is a term for warm weather fronts that start in the southwest Pacific and head toward California. This one started north of Hawaii, Null said. “It was a pretty significant series of storms,” he said. The storms actually swept through over a five-day period from Wednesday to Sunday, allowing some time for drowning areas to drain out. “If we had no breaks, it could have been worse.” After the first two storms saturated Bay Area flatlands and hillsides late last week, the National Weather Service issued flash-flood warnings over the weekend for Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties, including Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek, after as much as one inch of rain per hour fell in the area. And some of those predictions came true: On Sunday morning, authorities in Santa Cruz reported trees into power lines at several spots throughout the county. There were also two rock slides on Highway 17 — the narrow, winding connecting road between San Jose and Santa Cruz. The first slide was near Sugar Loaf Road and the second was reported at Glenwood Cutoff. Both required work but no major problems resulted. Although the Santa Cruz Mountains saw the heaviest rainfall, no part of the Bay Area was spared from the storms and the treacherous driving conditions they created. –Mercury News [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Northwest, N. Calif., Braces For More Rain and Snow

1:30 AM PST, December 4, 2012

By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Andrew Rosenthal

While the Northwest and northern California coast caught a bit of a break in the weather pattern to start off the work week, a fresh storm is moving onshore, bringing more flooding rain, gusty, possibly damaging winds and heavy mountain snow. Fortunately, the storm won`t be as powerful as the weekend storm and will likely loosen its grip by midweek.

Rain is already moving into Washington and northern Oregon, and it will continue to sink southward along the Interstate 5 corridor. Inland, cooler air will cause the moisture to be squeezed out as snow in the northern Cascades and northern Rockies.

Three to 6 inches will soak the already waterlogged Coastal Range and Cascades with 1 to 3 inches for inland valleys. This will be enough to cause flooding in the Willamette Valley. Flood Watches have been hoisted for northwestern Oregon and western Washington, including Portland, Ore.

The rain will add to the growing surplus for the year in Portland, Ore. Since October 1, rain has been 6 inches above average and for the year more than a foot above average. The same can be said in Seattle where rainfall is up almost 10 inches above average for 2012.

Places like Crescent City, Calif., which got pelted with more than 10 inches of rain from the last storm, will get another 3 inches just today. Eureka, Calif., will likely end up with 1.5 to 2 inches.

The weather will be a different story above 3,000 feet in the Cascades. All the Pacific moisture will turn into snow with snow levels rising from 2,500 feet to 4,500 feet on Tuesday. Six inches to a foot will fall in the northern Cascades and Sawtooth Mountains. Farther to the east, 15 to 20 inches will blast Wyoming`s Tetons.

Winter Storm Watches and Winter Weather Advisories have been posted for Washington`s Cascades as well as the Sawtooth and Teton Mountains in Idaho and Wyoming in advance of the snow.

Due to the heavy, wet nature of the snow, power outages and difficult driving can be expected along Interstate 90 through Snoqualmie Pass.

Rain will be driven by gusty southerly winds that could reach 60 mph in southern Oregon. These winds will cause difficult travel along Interstate 5 and across the southern Cascades. Here, Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings are in place.

The storm will exit Wednesday with another moisture wave poised to slide in from the North Pacific on Thursday. This one looks to primarily impact the Northwest Coast and steer clear of northern California. [link to weather.weatherbug.com]
