Re: Northwest, N. Calif., Braces For More Rain and Snow!!!
Thank-you, Luisport for all your effort to keep us up to date! Much appreciated. I'm in mtns. east of Sacramento & our little, local radio station seems to be downplaying it. I guess they assume everyone has t.v. Sac stations to keep them advised but I don't so thanks for tipping me off. I rely on radio & GLP (& internet)!

I'm in one of the areas to be getting 60 mph winds & have big trees all around me so probably will loose power. Happens a lot up here. But more worried about bridge - live on a creek and have to cross an old bridge to get out so am hoping creek doesn't rise too much. It will probably be fine but I'm prepared anyway. At least I'm below the expected snow level this time.

But being at higher elevation will be better up here but hoping that everyone in the valleys and coast stay safe though. Good luck to all!

Even the mainstream media SF Chronicle has latched onto the "atmospheric river" terminology.

[link to www.sfgate.com]

"(11-27) 07:47 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- An "atmospheric river" of rain is blowing toward the Bay Area and will unleash torrents of precipitation across the region from Wednesday morning though the weekend, forecasters said."

i don't know if anyone pointed this out because i haven't read through the threads, but did you know about "OPERATION AR-k-STORM"??

[link to meteora.ucsd.edu]

California Nevada Applications Program / California Climate Change Center
ARkStorm
CNAP/CCCC researcher Mike Dettinger has led coordination of the meteorological aspects and formulation for a USGS/NOAA team which has examined California's preparedness for a cataclysmic flood. The name for this scenario is ARk Storm and it ran during April 2011. CNAP/CCCC researchers Dan Cayan and Kelly Redmond were also part of this effort.

or is this why are calling it an "arkstorm" now???

Are you serious? We are in the middle of a long running drought, Lake Shasta is low, same for the San Luis reservoir. The high lakes in Fresno and Madera counties are all low, as are the lower lakes closer to Fresno. We are in the 4" for 5 day total zone, but like some meteorologists suggested, it could stall out for a longer period, adding to the already high totals predicted.

My real concern is mudslides, and not the slamming type.

All that rain is not going to have an easy time soaking into that dry, dry dirt either. Eeek! Nothing worse than a heavy rain after a drought.

My town is still saturated from the last rain storm. Im smack dab in the middle of the 15"+ according to the FB map and my house is 20' away from a creek ... I just ran to the store to stock up on beer so I have liquid energy to make all the sandbags.

That's the thing that gets me. It doesn't seem like "ARkStorm" was a mainstream topic for a long time. Then a few stories were in the news December 2010. But it really came to public prominence when USGS published reports on it in January 2011. Now here in November 2012 we're under threat of one.

Weirdness.

Re: Northwest, N. Calif., Braces For More Rain and Snow!!!
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Northern California residents are bracing for gusty winds, heavy rain, high seas and snow in the mountains as the area prepares for a series of storms.

In the first storm, rain was expected to fall Wednesday through Sunday across much of Northern California and snow in the higher elevations, according to the National Weather Service. Two more storms were forecast to follow.

Wind gusts could reach as high as 70 mph in coastal areas.

“There’s an atmospheric river coming directly toward the coast,” National Weather Service meteorologist Charles Bell told the San Francisco Chronicle ( [link to DON'T_USE-THIS] ).

With large waves expected to be generated by the storms, the U.S. Coast Guard is warning people to stay away from jetties and rocky areas along the coast.

The Coast Guard is also urging boat owners to avoid taking to the water during the next few days, and to make sure their boats are properly secured during the storms.

In the inland areas, a flood watch has been issued for the Sacramento Valley, where areas that were burned in recent wildfires are particularly vulnerable to mudslides. There is also the potential for urban and small stream flooding along the North Coast, where meteorologists say some areas could see as much as 12 inches of rain over the five-day period.

In eastern Butte and western Plumas counties, rainfall could exceed 20 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The Sierras could see as much as 2 feet of snow.

California’s Emergency Management Agency warned of potential power outages from downed trees and encouraged residents to make preparations, including clearing rain gutters and trimming tree branches.

Mark Ghilarducci, the agency’s secretary, said in a statement that the agency was monitoring the storms and was ready to assist local response efforts.

Still, other officials said they were not too worried at this point in the season.

“This would be the (season’s) first significant, really wet storm over Northern California,” Jeanine Jones with the state Department of Water Resources told the Sacramento Bee ( [link to sacb.ee] ).

There is room in reservoirs for additional water, she said, and the storms would replace soil moisture.

Re: Northwest, N. Calif., Braces For More Rain and Snow!!!
And according to TWC it's just the beginning ... They say it's equivalent to 5 storms in one ( sandy was 3) ... And it's affecting 6 states at least with over a foot of snow covering them.
This storm is to be followed by an unusually warm front (20degrees above average ) .... Sounds good right get a thaw and stuff ... Wrong
The collision of a cold front and a warm front both of extreme temperatures ... And containing the magnetic volcanic ash recently spued into the air by the hawaiian volcanoes .
First when to ordinary fronts collide there is a thunder storm from the positive and negative electrons in the clouds and air. Add now a highly magnetic volcanic ash and you have an electromagnetic storm ... Thunder claps and lighting strikes would be similar to EMP blasts ... Each blast ... Each clap.... The devastation could be massive in a technological aspect which of course comes with it's own set of problems.
Yeah rough stuff ahead ... Be ready it's actually happening right now.
"atmospheric river" is the term used- ironically where they flow rivers overflow and they have it ripping through the Midwest from Thursday to Saturday morning "TWC 0548(548a)
