Obama's energy chief sees .22 rifles as 'terrorist threat'
Warns 'large portions of our grid' could be taken down by attacker with .22

...
“A coordinated physical attack is a very, very unsettling thing to me,” Wellinghoff said. The FERC chairman said that about six weeks ago he visited a Pennsylvania plant where high- voltage transformers are made. “It was a very interesting and very eye-opening experience,” he said.

Transformers, which alter the voltage of electricity, are often custom built for utilities and can take 18 to 36 months to make, according to Wellinghoff. They are also inadequately protected, often surrounded only by chain-link fences, he said.

An attacker “could get 200 yards away with a .22 rifle and take the whole thing out,” Wellinghoff said.

Pretty sure a .22 would have a hard time going through the 1/4 inch of metal containing the transformer. I'd be more more concerned with high powered hunting rifles, for that purpose lol.

A handfull of motivated people with little resources could bring most any community to its knees in short order. Power/Water/Communications.
Just take a minute to think about it. It would not take much.

I thought that too. I think he's talking about the manufacturing facility where the winding is exposed before having that metal case surround it.

REALLY ?

STOP and THINK ! Obammy and cohorts 'planting' the idea SO THAT, WHEN a CME or Flare from the sun knocks out some/all of the 72 HOUSE SIZED transformers, ( And all electricity for homes, factories, stores, etc. including all compacting devices ) he can declare martial law and declare himself emperor TOO ! Parts for THOSE transformers ONLY MADE in France, Germany and Brazil !

Guess most of you have never played checkers, forget chess ! You have to look more that one move ahead ! Also forgot problem, reaction .. SOLUTION !

A pick up, a winch, and a sledge hammer can have the same effect, but thanks for giving nutbags great ideas. I heard this from the Emergency Management Director of our county fifteen years ago.

I've heard this form of disruptive terrorism bandied about for years. A .22? Maybe. The scenario I heard posited a more powerful rifle; a good deer gun.

It could be used to cut power to a large city. If there was really a terrorist threat here, it would have been done already.

another safety nazi. the government cannot make everything illegal they can think of. eventually we will not be allowed to own matches, kitchen knives, cars that weigh 4000 lbs and go 100 mph, nobody can wear shoes and women can't have fake boobs on an airplane, nobody can fly an airplane of any size, not even R/C, cannot own watches, speaker wire, cell phones, everyone's email and phone must be monitored, and where does it end? if you aren't huddled in a corner of the basement pulling your hat over your face in sheer terror for your life, you must be a terrorist and you will be held indefinitely for questioning!

dude is an idiot. idiots like that are what are dangerous.

“[The technician] reported all of our breakers at the Hulbert substation have been shot,” said Vahdatipour. “A close inspection by our crews indicated none of them were rendered inoperative, and they continued to operate. The transformer was also shot, but the bullet did not penetrate the transformer body.”

This happened in my hometown.

Re: Obama's energy chief sees .22 rifles as 'terrorist threat'
why a .22? simple. cheapest ammo on the planet (you cant reload a round for as little as a .22 costs). very easily suppressed audio signature. available EVERYWHERE without raising an eyebrow, even if you purchase rounds by the thousands. arms that fire the round are considered basically harmless by even you "knowledgeable firearms experts" that talk lots of shit on this forum. pretty much accurate and reliable no matter what action type. can be purchased at yard sales, garage sales, off classified ads with no questions asked in many places. everybody has 1 (at least) so its use for nefarious purposes generates a list of suspects that matches the entries in the local phone book.

I heard somewhere a .22 round was just as dangerous to soft targets. Apparently the magic bullet theory is possible with a .22 round simply due to its lightweight, and will travel the path of least resistance. IE, victims describing being shot in the arm and the bullet lodging itself into the femoral artery. Very nasty, very detrimental.
