Drought related shortages threaten United States food bank supplies

Government purchases through the Emergency Food Assistance Program fell by more than half this year; purchases that support both agriculture and hunger relief efforts. Most of the food stuffs purchased by the government go to support food banks, emergency shelters, and soup kitchens; all providing a safety net for those whose lives have been turned upside down, many by the financial debacle of the past several years. A large percentage of individuals needing food assistance are families with young children, and more and more people are experiencing the need to visit food banks for the first time in their lives because of our long term jobs crisis.

The statistics provided by Feeding America bring into focus the facts about hunger in America. Nearly 16.7 million children lived in food insecure households last year, equating to 20 percent or more of the child population in 36 states and Washington D.C.. In 2011, approximately 22 percent of American children lived in poverty. The 2012 statistics are obviously not tallied, but all indications point to more of the same.
