Re: Mandatory United Way donations...
Yep, UW is a big scam -- I almost got fired from a job because I was holding up the company from having a 100% contribution to them. I didn't want to because I was already giving directly to the charities that UW said they supported. And since I was doing this -- I saw no need to give to a company which in turn would only give part of the funds to the charity -- while keeping the rest in its pockets. Anyway, I needed my job so I caved and gave them $1.00 a pay period. That was well over 20 years ago -- and needless to say I never, ever gave to UW again. No one should be forced to contribute to something when they don't want to. As well, and as far as I am concerned, UW should be shut down -- because again, it's a big time scam.

Johnson's Foods in Muskogee, Oklahoma did they same shit to us 20 years ago. The managers bullied us into paying up for UW.

Re: Mandatory United Way donations...
I worked for a large employer some years back and it was expected. They couldn't mandate it, but it was heavily frowned upon to opt out. People who tried were called in to their dep't. head's office for discussions about how little the lowest donation level was and they expected at least that at the bare minimum. Donations were going to this same organization, United Way. It wasn't stated outright that people's jobs, promotions and preferred vacation times were at risk, but it was implied. Because of this, a very high percentage of the employees contributed, but felt forced. Somehow it was "known" which employees were not doing so and you'd hear others discussing it, too, so there were social sanctions as well.

Many companies and government offices allow you to select which charity from their 'umbrella' of nonprofits you would like to support. Haven't heard of any that make it absolutely mandatory, although in some places there is a lot of arm twisting so it might as well be.

I've never liked United Way but some of the individual charities perform worthwhile missions.

Stuff like this really gives me the creeps, making everyone bow down together to some P.R. department's idea.

I like to believe that I wouldn't work for a place that demanded this, but times are tough, and you have to pick your battles.

Small business is the answer to a lot of problems facing the world today I think. Try not to support the really huge corporate organizations that have hive-mind policies like this. I know it isn't always possible to stay away though.

Re: Mandatory United Way donations...
Big companies that sing the praises of their large annual donations to charity have been doing this for years. When consumers or potential shareholders hear about the company's contributions, they assume it's paid out of their corporate profits. In truth it comes out of they're employee's paychecks, though sometimes there is dollar for dollar matching by the employer, allegedly.

I got fired from a printing company in the 80's because I wouldnt give to the United Way. They pulled me into the office and told me I accidently marked no donation and I said it wasnt on accident. A few weeks later I was told that there wasnt enough work and I was being layed off.

Well is it weren't for the taxes in the first place, I'd probably be a lot more generous than I am now.

What do they do??? There is a boys and girls club here in town and it is filled with drug pushers..courtesy of the UW.

I would rather give 2 dollars a pay to feed someone who needs it...or even the Salvation Army..hell, I would give it to the Jaycees..actually, when I was around 8 years old, my dad was a coal miner and at Christmas time he was on strike...makes for a sucky Christmas, let me tell you..anyway, I can remember that I was picked to go with the Jaycees to Christmas shop at a local Dept. store...that was a good, childhood experience I will never forget.
But this UW is just a crock...like the most of the multi-million dollar charities out there.

I had a job try that and when asked, I pointed out that I was raised Catholic and did not believe in paying for abortions. I had a religious reason to not fund it, and there wasn't much they could do.

Turned out that the owner was pro life and it got stopped.

i was laid off after 13 years of not giving. one year my manager even had me do the yearly pitch to the department. money isn't the answer. it's too convertable, right into the administrator's pocket. the red cross gives me the heebie geebies also. something's not right.

Re: Mandatory United Way donations...
one of my oldest pet peeves.

In the 1980's I was asked to donate to UW and said no.

At work, of course. My boss explained that I could direct the "donation" and that they were seeking to get the highest level of participation possible.

I am not sure after all this time, but I think I said no.
If it is mandatory it is NOT a donation.

After having been in East Germany (a visitor) I understand when you are marching in in a May Day parade with your co-workers it is not VOLUNTARY.

Don't call it a donation, and don't approach me at work for ANYTHING if you are a boss.
