and seriously OP, you've never heard of a manatee? You need to switch the TV channels, get off GLP for awhile to other websites, or go to the ocean!

No victim, no crime. The thought of putting a woman in a cage for not doing any harm is repulsive and slavery.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20901334

Most sea creatures have a mucousal film that protects their skin. This cow touching it like that is sure to disrupt it not to mention the terror the poor manatee must have felt. It probably thought she was trying to rape it!

Also humans have germs that the manatee would have no protection against.

There are reasons to leave them alone.

But some people can't leave anything alone.

All states that have manatees have laws to protect them. This woman is obviously some kind of snowbird transplant and should have better informed herself before going out and molesting the wildlife.

Manatees are very gentle creatures and they are vegetarians too. They're very friendly and because of that a lot of them get killed by motorboats because they get too close. Please don't ride the manatees.

A 53-year-old Florida woman was arrested at the Sears where she works on Saturday after being photographed in late September playing with– and seemingly trying to “ride”– a wild manatee.

The Tampa Bay Times has the wild background to the story:

If you don't know what a manatee is, consult Google before making yourself look like an ass.

They're a very endangered species that stay close to the beach and civilization, which is why they're endangered. Fucking around with them is strictly against the law, and for damn good reason.

No doubt.

How dare they enforce the law. How dare they arrest someone that violated federal/local law and how dare they do anything to a person that harassed a protected animal.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it." Amen.

Who wakes up one morning and thinks,"..."
 Quoting: CuriosityCat1

That's your first mistake right there. People who do stupid things do not think, especially that far ahead for the day. People who ride manatees wake up, wait to be fed, and then ride manatees. There is no thought process whatsoever going on at any part of their day. Laws are irrelevant to these people because they cannot think ahead to understand consequences. Hopefully 2 months in jail will at least teach her to not ride manatees. And if we are lucky, she will learn not to ride other animals of a similar build (hippos, sea otters, small whales, sea turtles, etc...).

You're an idiot.

It is a crime.

She is harassing a protected marine mammal.

I've never been to Florida, but I've know this law for years. Don't mess with or try to play with marine mammals or sea turtles. It's usually illegal.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. One is not an animal lover if they are ignorant of the laws that protect them.

Besides, what kind of selfish bitch molests an animal for their own pleasure without any regard to the ceature's well being.

It's a life form, not her personal toy to play with.
